Free Music Notes for The B-52'sFree Music Review: An absolute, must have album ! Hit: 5 StarsSo many people have tried to sum up this album, and, even reading the reviews here, I have come to the conclusion that it's impossible to sum up. This superb masterpiece from those funky bohemians from Athens, Georgia, was an offbeat, otherworldly, 3rd dimensional oddity that was truly unique in 1979, and, 23 years later, is still an amazing, one of a kind album. If this album is not in your collection, then you couldn't possibly be a "serious" collector. Although the obvious and most common adjectives to describe this debut are along the lines of, "wacky" "funny" and "goofy," most critics forget to mention what great musicians they are. This band created some of the tightest and funkiest rythym since James Brown in his heydeys. Sure, their lyrics and vocals were intentionally "tongue in cheek," but that music was the work of seriously gifted artists, hellbent on making you shake your rump. Ricky Wilson's guitar work never ceases to amaze me, nor does Kate Pierson's phenominal work on the keyboards. I could rattle on and on about this album, but trust me.....just buy it ! This album earned it's classic status the hard way and strictly on it's own merits, proving that something great will endure the test of time. A very deserving 5 star effort.
Free Music Review: B-52.... BINGO! Hit: 5 StarsUnbeknownst to the majority of people, a satellite manned by an Athens, GA quintet detected the next The planet's name? Claire, which breaks the traditions of naming planets after Roman gods and goddesses. Anyway, the series of beeps heard from that planet is what starts off the first song from the B-52's"52 Girls" is a cool, chugging ditty with the signature surf guitar that characterized the B-52's. "Dance This Mess Around" is a mid-paced song with the amusing refrain, "Why won't you dance with me/I'm not no Limburger" shouted out by Katie Pierson. The centerpiece is the 6:49 opus "Rock Lobster," which demonstrates the ne plus ultra of wackiness and fun for the quintet. The real surreal line that really caught me: "We were at the beach/Everybody had matching towels." If the B-52's played a party by the ocean, mermaids, fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, lamellibrates of all shapes and sizes would show up to boogie. And love that swirling effect after Fred sings "Down, down." There are too many silly sounds and bizarre lines in this song to mention. "Lava" really goes into overdrive with the volcanic comparisons and similes, with references to Mauna Loa, Krakatoa, Pompeii. And here's real trip: "My love may be as high as the highest volcano" Volcano instead of mountain: now that I like. Oh yes, I guess just like the movie, they didn't realize that Krakatoa is actually WEST of Java. It's OK--not many people know that. "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)" (love that title!) is the other space song here, which might make astronomy students chuckle or make the subject fun for first-time students. If not, "you get a mouth, a mouthful of red Kryptonite." Ha ha! It's a real jamming tune, what with the chugging guitar. Lists seem to pop up in B-52's songs. In "52 Girls", 25 girls are listed, if you count Kate's name sung twice, and if you count Jack as a truncated version of Jackie. So the number is 52 in reverse. OK. And what about those dances in "Dance This Mess Around"--the Shu-ga-loo, the Shy Tuna, the Camel Walk, the Hip-O-Crit, Aqua-velva, the Dirty dog, and the Escalator? Some are those have to be fictitious. Oh yes, and dig the marine life listed in "Rock Lobster." Silly choruses: "Shake-a bake shake shake" and "Yeah yeah yeah yeah..." "Scoodoobie-wop!", "Won-ton-ton-ton rama-in-Andromeda" Silly and fun is the key to enjoying the B-52's, and anyone who's been raised on sour grapes or ugly fruit should recover in no time at all. These are the only B-52's that will get the approval of an anti-war protester, and that's the way it should be. Well, I'm gonna either jump in a crater or ride in a golden meteorite with a bikini whale. So see ya later!
Free Music Review: Warning: Addictive! Hit: 5 StarsI don't know anyone who owns this disc who doesn't play the spots off of it regularly. The musicianship isn't exactly virtuoso... but these tunes get under your skin. I can't listen to a single track and sit still. The lyrics are sometimes just nonsense, but the way they're performed here they take on the urgency of some Springsteen anthem: Somebody went under a dock, and there they saw a rock. But it wasn't a rock..... It was a ROCK LOBSTER!!!!Words can't do this recording justice.... but how many people already familiar with "Rock Lobster" mentally started twanging out the guitar riff upon reading the above lyrics? DOW-DOW-DOW duh-duh dih-duh dih-duh!!! Most of the tunes on this disc when played publicly, will immediately result in a loud cheerful whoop of recognition, followed by quickly moving feet.
Free Music Review: Admit it...you can't help but like it. Hit: 5 StarsWhen I was 15 years old in '79, I finally got my first stereo. Hitachi metal cone speakers, Pioneer reciever, and technics turntable. Now I need music. CD's not invented then. Okay this album looks pretty cool. I slightyly recall the song Rock Lobster from radio play. Question: Why did that have to be my first album ever. Fast forward 22 years. I've got Aimster, let's download my first album. Took me right back. And although I was embarrassed about that being my first album then, I now realize why I listened to it so freakin' much. I was just good. And now as I burn my cd, I can't wait to get it in my car and crank it like there's no tomorrow. I'll be 15 again. Just get this album any which way but loose and even then.
Free Music Review: Still my favorite Hit: 5 StarsI bought this album(note that I didn't say CD)many years ago when I first started college. Since then, I have added the cd version to my collection so that I could play it more often. It has the classics Rock Lobster and Planet Claire plus many others. There isn't a bad tune on the disc.
