Free Music Notes for Greatest Hits, Vol. 1-2Free Music Review: Jazz For Kids - Get Them Started Early! Hit: 5 StarsLast year, when the first "Baby Loves Jazz" CD was released I did an experiment. Whenever I went to visit friends who have small children (2-4 years old), I took the disc with me and asked their parents to play it while I watched how the kids reacted. In nearly every case the children - both boys and girls - were soon watching the speakers and clapping their hands or tapping their feet. Not only that, but the parents weren't bored either. Guess that's why the CD became a big success.
This year, the producers upped the ante by issuing this two-CD set of "Greatest Hits". While the title is a bit corny and misleading - there was only one disc previously issued - it's what's in the package that counts, I guess. The 26 songs - they are short, since the full set runs about 80 minutes - contain tracks from the first release plus a bunch of new songs. There are "jazzed up" standards like "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and "This Little Piggy" as well as new songs like ""Four Funky Fish" and "I Use Potty" (yep!). The "jazz" style is closer to bebop than jazz of the 20s or 30s (or "Smooth Jazz") and the musicians are New York session players. Sharon Jones, the vocalist, has a new pop CD out on her own.
The nicely packaged album comes with a colorful poster and is almost budget priced at a $17.98 list for the 2-disc set. That's a bargain to keep yoking children entertained for a few hours, and low enough that - even if you own the 2006 original - you can replace it in child's music collection.
