A lot of attention is being paid to the Bad Plus' new CD - These are the Vistas - and deservedly so. A lot of that attention is placed upon their unusual and somewhat daring choice of rock covers - notably Heart of Glass and Smells Like Teen Spirit - and not so deservedly so. The rock covers are wonderful and original takes on songs that are very familiar to most listeners. They do an incredible job of bringing a fresh approach to these songs without deviating from their core.
Nevertheless, on repeated listenings, the original compositions that form 70% of the album are what really stand out. From the very first drum strikes and piano keystrokes of Big Eater, the Big Plus will grab you and demand you pay attention. The back and forth of Iverson's meandering piano and King's frenetic drums are a beauty to behold. This is a must album for anyone looking for a fresh, original and well executed sound.
