Free Music Notes for CahootsFree Music Review: BY 1971 THE ROAD WAS LEADING TO THE WALTZ Hit: 3 StarsTHIS ALBUM IS RECOMMENDED FOR SERIOUS COLLECTORS.....ON ROCK OF AGES I BELIEVE ONLY ONE OF THEIR ORIGINAL SONGS OFFERED HERE TURNS UP.
Robbie, Rick, Richard, Garth, and Levon played something like 40 instruments -In Levons book he talks about how after this album by 3? Years they did half an album that "didn't work out" so they recorded Moondog!!!
The Band's best music is not on this album SO ILL SKIP BUYING THE cd WITH THE NEW TRACKS.However those new tracks might make it worth buying!
The songwriting of Robbie / Richard, is not too evident here nor is their once Coproducer John Simon so the album is very badly produced.....and judging by the sound of it they werent getting along too well.
Bob Dylan's 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' sounds playful! In the 1970s writer/enemy Boob Christgau said their LP "BEST OF' " ...salvages Cahoots/ Stagefright but not on the same side!"...Christgau like many critics sounding like a cranky jackass!
With their songwriting pen on hold here they turn to friend/ collaborator Bob Dylan's 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' which sounds playful!
Free Music Review: ?m I the only troop out of step? Hit: 5 StarsWhile I grew up on Dylan, Hendrix, The Stones, Janis et al. I had the very rare privelege of missing out on the Band during the 60s & 70s. I was quite aware of their albums but never got round to listening to them. This meant that when I came to listening to their albums seriously for the first time last year (at age 51!)I had no bias of measuring Cahoots up to anything that had preceded it. After listening to snippets I walked out with all three albums that the store had in stock, viz. Cahoots, Stage Fright and Jericho. I love all three albums, and especially Cahoots. Subsequently I acquired Big Pink & the brown album. They are indeed superb, but I somehow think that many listeners are missing something about Cahoots: if one listens to the radio ad included on the remastered version, The Band state that they have moved on, like we all have. Well they did move on, and, to my taste, without diminution. In fact - dare I say it? - I prefer Cahoots to te 1st two albums!
Free Music Review: IN SEARCH OF INSPIRATION Hit: 4 StarsAfter mining their created mythology of Americana on their first two releases and then confronting the reality of themselves on their third release, Cahoots captures The Band at a crossroads.Robertson's writing seems strained by the responsibilty of carrying the songwriting chores without much in the way of input from his bandmates. The result is the sound of band treading water waiting for the next wave of inspiration to appear. The bonus tracks on the re-mastered release add a spark of life to this album and are a welcome addition.I feel they would have elevated the original album had they been included initially. They certainly elevate this release from 3 stars to 4 stars.
Free Music Review: Don't skip this one Hit: 4 StarsDon't pass this album up. It has gotten a bad rap because as a whole it's defenitely not as good as the first three. With that said, "Last of the Blacksmiths" belongs right up there with "King Harvest" and "Old Dixie." That song is worth the price of the album itself, a well written song with an amazing vocal performance by Richard Manuel. "Endless Highway" is also one of The Band's very best(however the live version on "Before the Flood" is even better). The rest of the album is very listenable, much better than just about anything being released by bands today. If you're a fan of The Band, this album is just as essential as every one of their albums, don't pass it up.
Free Music Review: Most bands would give their left arm for an album as good as this Hit: 5 StarsThis 4th Band album has gotten a bad rap over the years. Only because the first 3 were so legendary. I tell you what, do yourself a favor and listen to this album again, I was amazed how good it really is. With songs like The River Hymm, Life Is A Carnival, Moon Struck One, Shoot Out in Chinatown an dthe underrated Volcano, it's an album most bands would die for to make.
