From the excellent harmony and musicianship to the lyrics and arrangements (though the latter are a slight bit dated), "Music From Big Pink" is a journey through an America you simply cannot find anymore. This is the perfect album that could never be released today. If you want to hear talent, pick this up. Any individual member of the Band had more talent than nearly any band out there today.Imagine five great players, three great singers, two great songwriters and mix it all up in a garish pink house in the Catskills, and you get "Music From Big Pink."

One of the best classic rock albums of all time, even though the album defies categorization. It's folk, it's blues, it's jazz, it's country, with an Appalachian-Gospel feel and a ton of roots influence.These were excellent musicians and they churned out excellent tunes. If you want a greatest hits album from The Band, this is it. Nothing like it prior, and nothing like it since.

The Band's "Music from Big Pink" is as timeless a classic as any album you will ever listen to. The music is still fresh and exciting even though the album is more then 30 years old. From the first track, the moving "Tears of Rage", the listener knows that this is not going to be an average listening experience. And why is "Music from Big Pink" so distinct? Well, there are a lot of contributing factors, but the sheer talent and range of The Band is what sets them apart. The voices of Levon Helm, Rich Danko and Richard Manuel are some of the best in rock and roll: they're filled with character, which allows the characters in their songs to come alive. Robbie Robertson's guitar playing is superb, though he plays no solos, choosing to rely on other instruments to help carry the songs, especially the organ playing of Garth Hudson, who really shines. Lastly, the song writing. Although Robbie Robertson doesn't come into his own until The Band's self-titled second album, the collected song writing talents of The Band, plus Bob Dylan, manage to create a unique and inspiring collection of songs.
Highlights of the album are "The Weight", a classic, "Chest Fever", a blast to listen to, the aforementioned "Tears of Rage" and "Long Black veil", a cover that tops any other version of the song.
"Music from Big Pink" is the type of album that can be listened to at any time and still feel like your first listen.
Free Music Review: Perfect Greyhound soundtrack

A friend of mine gave me a tape of this album on a rainy day, back in 1989, just before I took a 6 hour ride on a Greyhound bus across Virginia. I'd heard The Basement Tapes before, but not this album. I put it on, settled into my headphones, listened to it, looked out the window and played it over and over and over for the entire ride. It's the perfect soundtrack for looking out a window watching backroads go by. Over the years, I've grown to enjoy the grooves of their second album more, but this one is trickier and more textural, like a strange friend that you like but only hang out with occasionally. It's also excellent music but far better spokespeople than me have already made that clear.

saw the BAND in London 70s,after getting BIG PINK got LAST WALTZ And continued to be amazed then along comes the DVD Audio they styarted a new beginning and this just keeps it going.......BRILLIANT
