Free Music Review: "another step forward for the boys..."

This two-fer set of the Beach Boys mixing the "Little Deuce Coupe" album, and the "All Summer Long" (with both title tracks being very memorable), are some of the Boys' better albums/records.

While probablly the most notable #1 hit on "Little Deuce Coupe", being 'I Get Around', there are also loads of great BB car-related tunes on this side. One of my favorite being "Our Car Club", featuring a tough Mike Love lead vocal, with Brian at his side on false setto in the front, and Dennis rockin out on the drums followed by a bari or bass saxophone there's no way you can't beat this song, true lyrics are weak, but how they present it is just breathtaking. There are two versions of "Be True To Your School" on this too. One being the really strong (and my personal favorite of the two) being track #3 of the song, as supposed to the more schoolyard feel as on track #25. "Car Crazy Cutie" is a classic "doo-wop" take for the Boys of summer, and very well done as well, especially strong vocals again, only this time from Brian on lead, and Mike on the bass line. As you listen to "A Young Man Is Gone", and you think of the Four Freshman's "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring", you are right. The boys re-wrote the lyrics, but kept that same great melody for a tribute to James Dean. Also featured on this side are great songs like "Cherry, Cherry Coupe", "Spirit of America", and a great rendition of "Hushabye", where an a capella version is shown on disc 5 in "Thirty Years of the Beach Boys" Box Set.

Now we move along to "All Summer Long". The title track in and of itself is a great summer tune, one to listen to again and again, also featured on this side is the fan-favorite "Little Honda", also performed by the Hondells, and a bonus track of a variation of "Little Honda" where in the chorus in the alternate take they sing "Go, Little Honda, Faster Litte Honda", as supposed to "Honda, Honda, goin faster faster", etc. "Drive-In" is a kind of corny song, but is a funny and good tune to sing along with, they also re-recorded it with sleigh bells, and added the lyrics from "Little Saint Nick" to it for their Christmas album. A favorite of mine, "Don't Back Down" is featured on "All Summer Long", which features Mike and Brian on lead, and on each time Brian sings in false setto "OOoo you gotta be a little nuts, but show 'em now who's got guts, don't back down from that waaave" listen to how each time he sings it, he gives more POWER to it, especially when he finally sings it. "Our Favorite Recording Sessions", is a hilarious verbal fight between Mike Love and Brian Wilson making fun of how each other sings, while preparing for a concert for the weekend. Although there aren't as good collection of songs on "All Summer Long" album, this two-fer certainly is one to get, for hard-core fans, and newcomers to the Beach Boys. A recommendation for newcomers though would be "Surfin' Safari/Surfin' U.S.A" two-fer package. Have fun, and jam along to "Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long"!!

Released just one month after the Surfer Girl album, Little Deuce Coupe was, incredibly, the band's fourth album in less than a year. Brian Wilson and the band responded by turning in arguably their most consistent effort to date--and a concept album, to boot. Deuce Coupe expanded the band's subject matter to encompass 1963 America's burgeoning love affair with hot rods, surrounding previously released cuts such as the title track, "409," and others with strong new material (much of it cowritten by Wilson and a DJ, Roger Christian). A highpoint: the a cappella James Dean tribute "A Young Man Is Gone" (a reworking of Bobby Troup's beautiful "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring"), a prime example of Wilson's arranging genius and the band's vocal prowess. All Summer Long was notable not only for racheting up the band's standards and essentially bidding farewell to the surf songs that inspired both their name and reputation, but also for going toe-to-toe with one of rock's most explosive phenomena--Beatlemania--and coming away victorious, with the single "I Get Around" soaring to No. 1 in the spring of 1964. Essentially another loose concept record (revolving around the innocent hedonistic pursuits of an idyllic SoCal summer) that takes its cue from the effervescent title track, it also documents Brian's restless creativity pushing the band toward its performing peak. Bonus takes include the superior single take of band staple "Be True to Your School," alternate takes of "Little Honda" and "Don't Back Down," and the slightly salacious outtake "All Dressed Up for School." Both albums have also been sonically burnished via 24-bit digital remastering. --Jerry McCulley
