Free Music Notes for Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys

Free Music Review: GREAT collection -- but it SHOULD have been all in stereo...
Hit: 4 Stars

I agree with those who have the same gripe I do regarding this fantastic music continually re-issued with some of the songs in mono rather than the re-mastered ((stereo)) versions which ARE available. Some may wonder exactly why at a time when stereo recording was well beyond its infancy anything was recorded in mono...the answer is actually a simple one: Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear and couldn't HEAR in stereo, and therefore concentrated on all other aspects of producing rather than on the stereo quality. Again, it almost sounds too strange to be true, but that's the fact, Jack.

Since then Brian has gone and personally overseen the re-mastering of all the music recorded in mono to fantastic quality stereo. Other than the mono problem, Brian was a musical prodigy and a musical producer without peer. When he wrote music he could *hear* the music in his head as it should sound in harmony before he put the notes on paper. It takes a special kind of genius that can pull that off. The result is a collection from the early 60's through their final hit in '88 (Kokomo) that is arguably one of the greatest in the entire rock era. Off the top of my head I honestly cannot think of a song that wasn't included that really ought to have been. My personal favorite of all is "The Sloop John B" and while I cannot tell you exactly why, it just brings back a whole slew of great memories for me.

What the Beach Boys music I believe does better than just about everyone else is it gives us the taste of Summer we remember from so long ago, and for the most part, the music reminds us of the good times (at least it does for me). For a long time it seemed as though the Beach Boys were much like the Stones in that they would carry on forever, but unfortunately things didn't work out that way. Fractures in the band with some of the original members have created a break-up that isn't likely to be mended anytime soon, which is sad indeed.

While I await for this collection to be re-issued entirely in stereo, what makes this edition entirely acceptable is the fact that for the vast majority, most of these songs were heard in mono to begin with, so its difficult to judge how much better they COULD be unless you are familiar with them in that format. IF you don't care one way or another, this is a tremendous collection and the only reason it didn't receive the full 5 stars is because they aren't all in stereo. When that version is out, you can be assured I'll be buying that copy right away. As far as Greatest Hits collections go, you would be hard pressed to find a better selection than this one.

Free Music Review: Beach Boys Still Rock
Hit: 5 Stars

I ordered this CD to play at work. It's fun to see customers singing and dancing while waiting in line, and music helps the time to pass faster. There are a lot of songs on this one, so it doesn't get boring. We especially dig a French Bikini on a wild alley goat by a palm tree in the sand.

Free Music Review: A gift for Mom
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this as a birthday present for my mom, who grew up in southern California, and has never quite gotten used to Utah winters in the 40+ years she has been here. She listens to this over and over.

Free Music Review: SOUNDS OF SUMMER. A NICE BEACH BOYS HITS COLLECTION. THERE ARE OTHER BEACH BOYS ALTERNATIVES............................
Hit: 5 Stars

A nice Beach Boys hits collection. Thirty songs that capture the Beach Boys through their illustrious career. A nice remastered cd, despite original mono mixes, the original sound quality is limited, but does'nt sound half bad. From "Surfin Safari" to "Kokomo" every song tells a different story, as well as a time during the Beach Boys career. The linear notes are interesting, as I a like that the release dates of each hit are included. "Sounds Of Summer" The Very Best Of The Beach Boys" will satisfy most Beach Boys fans. I have Beach Boys "Greatest Hits" Volume I,II,III only because I found them at a good price.
If you really want to get more hits from the Beach Boys you could get the Capital reissue twofers cds or the 1993 released 5 CD box set Years Of Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach BoysEither way you choose to go, "Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys" is great for the casual Beach Boys fan or the Beach Boys Completist.
