Free Music Notes for Sounds of Summer: Very Best of The Beach BoysFree Music Review: Beach Boys "Truly America's Band"- by Johnny T. Hit: 5 Stars
Although I have not purchased this album, I do own over 20 Beach Boy/Brian Wilson Album so I feel like I have earned my right to voice my opinion. The Beach Boys represent all that is right with music. One can feel the bubblegum harmonies of the first few albums, one can feel Brian Wilson's painful transition of growing up into a man i.e, late Summer Day's and Summer Nights!!! and of course Pet Sounds. The late 60's early 70's albums, such as Wild Honey,Friends,20/20 and Surf's Up were arguably the best Beach Boy era. The influence of Karl and Dennis when Brian was out of the mix is trully amazing. Brian, Dennis and Karl were all masterful musicians. Even though Brian gets labeled a "genius", and rightfully so, we tend to leave out Carl's funky/soul writing of the mid 70's and Dennis' songs influenced by his tourchered heart. The sum of the Beach Boy's really did equal its parts. Even Mike Love, the "joke" some might say really had a big role in developing the early albums of Surfin U.S.A, Surfin Safari and All Summer Long. Modern Day, the Beach Boys' influence can be seen much more than there counterparts, like the Beatles. I can go on and on about this band, but I just wanted to voice some random thoughts about "Americas Band" the group I like to think of as the Beach Boys!
Free Music Review: Mono was Brian's intention Hit: 5 Stars
I must take issue with the reviewers who assessed demerits for this compilation because some of the songs were in mono. Stereo mixes of Mono songs are like colorized Black and White movies. The mono mixes were the product of Brian Wilson's artistic intent. Brian preferred mono for two reasons. First, he had difficulties evaluating a developing Stereo mix, as he has 9% hearing in one ear. Second, he agrees with Phil Spector that with a mono mix, the artist has greater control over the final sound delivered to the audience. With Stereo, there is no way to determine the final mix because of the various configurations of Stereo speakers. One of the great music marketing travisties of the 70's was the advent of "Mono Reprocessed For Stereo" records. Even with the superb Stereo remixes Mark Linett has achieved on this record, the ultimate effect preoccupies the listener with the differences in the mixes. Don't get me wrong, the stereo mix of Pet Sounds was a revelation, and I anxiously await the release of the 6-channel mix on DVD-A. But in the face of what are probably the greatest pop compositions the US has ever produced, such concerns are a trivality not warranting a full star demerit. Do yourself a favor. Order this CD and PET SOUNDS together. It may just change your life.
Free Music Review: It doesn't get much better than this! Hit: 5 Stars
I can't think of a better compilation of a single band's work than this! I've always been of two minds regarding the Beach Boys. On one hand they can provide fuel for cynics by producing songs with trite lyrics that look silly beyond belief on the printed page. But when you listen to the music and their harmonies, you quickly fall under the spell of fantastic musicianship. They can be crass and commercial in the extreme, with concerts that are formulaic and multiple "Best of..." collections that only exploit the show business maxim of "always leave them wanting more." But there is nothing to criticize here... nothing at all. When all is said and done, it's about the music, and the music of the Beach Boys is something special! Listening to this collection of thirty hits (with nary a clinker among them), you can almost wear yourself out just tapping your foot and moving with the music. Ask any group of fans for their favorite Beach Boys classic, and you'll likely get a different answer from each; my vote would be for Sloop John B. But I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the population will fine their own "my favorite Beach Boys" song on this CD. And they will sing/hum/dance or drum along with every cut on this fantastic body of work!
Free Music Review: Keeps the Summer Alive Hit: 5 Stars
Sounds Of Summer is the latest in a trend of greatest hits albums sparked by Elvis and was copied by Elton John, The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac.Sounds Of Summer does not fail to deliver. Sounds Of Summer takes you back to the fantasy world of girls, cars and of course, surfing. It is also fitting that it starts and ends with their two most perennially popular songs ( California Girls and Good Vibrations ). Sandwiched between these two classics are 28 classics that defined an era. The music is a mix of carefree, guitar - driven rockers like Fun Fun Fun, Surfin' USA, Little Deuce Coupe and I Get Around and yearning ballads like Getcha Back, Good Timin', Help Me Rhonda ( though it could just as easily fall into the first category, this one expresses the down and out mood of any other ballad ), Don't Worry Baby ( my absolute favorite Beach Boys tune ) and perhaps the most beautiful love song they ever wrote, Surfer Girl. Even lesser known tracks like Do It Again, I Can Hear Music, Darlin', and even the dreadful Wild Honey are to conjure up the memories of a happier time. Sounds Of Summer is perfect for any Summer event, whether it's a barbequeue, a wedding or even a funeral ( okay, maybe not that far ). The point is, buy it, dammit.
Free Music Review: A very strong collection of their hits Hit: 5 Stars
So many of their songs are well known, and not just to those who were raised on this music, but to people of all ages. Part of the reason may be that surf music is inextricably linked with the sixties - you won't find any modern equivalent. On this American compilation, you get the classic songs they wrote themselves - California girls, Fun fun fun, Good vibrations, Little deuce coupe, Help me Rhonda, God only knows, Darlin', I get around and Wouldn't it be nice to name just a few - together with songs that they covered in their own unique way - Do you wanna dance and Sloop John B. There have been plenty of compilations of their music down the years and will be many more. Given the number of classic songs they recorded, picking just thirty inevitably means that some great songs get left out. A 30 track compilation released in the UK in 2003 contained 24 of the 30 tracks available here - the other six tracks being Little Honda, Then I kissed her, Caroline no, Break away, Cotton fields and Lady Lynda, instead of Shut down, Be true to your school, In your room, Getcha back, Come go with me and Good timing. Clearly, there isn't a lot to choose between the two, so I recommend that you just buy your local version.
