Free Music Notes for Sounds of Summer: Very Best of The Beach Boys

Free Music Review: I got sand in my ears!
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't raised on The Beach Boys, but I did find them on my own. I didn't even know who they were until David Lee Roth came out with his cover of "California Girls". There is NOTHING like the real thing! Can there BE more harmonies within these songs?! AMAZING! Brian Wilson was a true genius. I would prefer these guys over The Beatles for two reasons: (1) It took 4 guys and a producer to come out with what The Beatles did. Brian Wilson (JUST HIMSELF) wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed...how many albums you ask...get ready...FOURTEEN (14) in FOUR (4) years!!! That is astonishing! (2) I have their live album from when they were on the Ed Sullivan Show, and the girls were screaming just as loud, if not louder, for them than they were for The Beatles.

Wow! Fourteen albums in four years. That's one album every 3 1/2 months. I have a band myself, and we never wrote 5 songs in ONE month, much less think about recording them yet. However, legends that they are, their music will never die. Dig them, you will definitely dig this album. It's a greatest hits for crying out loud. Another one at that. Even if you don't like The Beach Boys, get this album. You may change your mind.

Free Music Review: Music doesn't get any better
Hit: 5 Stars

I grew up on the Beach Boys and remember them appearing on Ed Sullivan when I was three years old. In those heady days, had anyone suggested that Brian Wilson was a genius, they would have been thrown into the nearest loonie bin. But now, his catalogue of work compares favorably to anyone else of that generations, excepting Dylan, the Stones and, of course, the incomparable Lennon and McCartney. Consider that Brian wrote, arranged and produced these 2 minute pop masterpieces. He also devised and invented the incredible harmonizing of the band. Yes, a real genius was Brian, this disc proves it.

This is by far the best one-disc compilation of the Beach Boys hits. It far eclipses the two-disc hits packages of 1975 and 1976, "Endless Summer" and "Spirit of America." The songs are all remastered and many are in the original mono, which changes them slightly, but improves upon them. The package spans the period 1962-1985. My only regret is they didn't include their first minor hit, "Surfin,' a rather inexplicable omission. But the rest of the songs are truly happy music. It's hard not to feel good about life when listening to the Beach Boys.

Free Music Review: Finally a comprehensive single disc set
Hit: 5 Stars

After years and years of trying to gather the Beach Boys' best known music from all of the different eras of their career, Capitol has finally gotten it right with SOUNDS OF SUMMER.

Until recently, such a career-spanning overview as this was not possible, since the copyrights to the band's music were controlled by several different labels. Capitol finally owns the rights to all of the group's albums, though, and, for those who can't afford the still-definitive boxed set GOOD VIBRATIONS: THIRTY YEARS OF THE BEACH BOYS, this is the place to start.

As with similar sets by other over-anthologized artists (the Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra), diehard fans will quibble with the song selection, but for the casual fan looking to grab one Beach Boys CD for that trip to the beach or to give to a friend (or offspring!) as an introduction to the group's music, SOUNDS OF SUMMER more than fills the bill.

Those who like what they hear on this set, of course, can (and hopefully will) go on to plenty of other CDs (ref: the double play TODAY AND SUMMER DAYS, or PET SOUNDS), but as a Beach Boys starting point, there are few better collections than this one.

Free Music Review: The Summer of 63
Hit: 5 Stars

If you were a teenager in the Summer of '63 (or '64, '65, and '66) you were listening to the Beach Boys. Their songs were playing on car radios, on transistor radios at the beach, and on radios in your room. The "hit" radio versions were "singles" mixed in mono for maximum impact over the "one speaker" radios that most teens were listening to.

Some, but not all, teens could afford to buy albums, and bought the "stereo" album mixes of those hits. But, the stereo mixes were NOT the hit versions we had heard (and burned into our memories) during weeks of radio re-playing.

The strong point of this "ultimate" Beach Boys CD is that when two mixes are available, the "hit" version, often in mono, is the mix that is used. These are the REAL thing, just the way they sounded back in 1963.

Thirty of the Beach Boys best songs...an audio "time machine" that can transport "baby boomers" back four decades in time...on a single CD at an attractive price. What more could a Beach Boy fan ask for?

Free Music Review: SOUNDS OF SUMMER. A NICE BEACH BOYS HITS COLLECTION. THERE ARE OTHER BEACH BOYS 5 Stars

A nice Beach Boys hits collection. Thirty songs that capture the Beach Boys through their illustrious career. A nice remastered cd, despite original mono mixes, the original sound quality is limited, but does'nt sound half bad. From "Surfin Safari" to "Kokomo" every song tells a different story, as well as a time during the Beach Boys career. The linear notes are interesting, as I a like that the release dates of each hit are included. "Sounds Of Summer" The Very Best Of The Beach Boys" will satisfy most Beach Boys fans. I have Beach Boys "Greatest Hits" Volume I,II,III only because I found them at a good price.
If you really want to get more hits from the Beach Boys you could get the Capital reissue twofers cds or the 1993 released 5 CD box set Years Of Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach BoysEither way you choose to go, "Sounds Of Summer - The Very Best Of The Beach Boys" is great for the casual Beach Boys fan or the Beach Boys Completist.
