Free Music Review: For those who thought they knew the BBs, think again!
Hit: 5 Stars

Whenever I argue with friends about the artistic relevance of the BBs, I lend them a copy of SUNFLOWER (they already know about PET SOUNDS). It desveres its reputation as a lost classic, for it's the sound of the BBs trying to find a new sound, making music that doesn't self-consciously evoke their LBJ-era glory days. I remember vividly buying this as an LP in 1978, shortly before it disappeared from record stores forever, and marvelling at the delights: the acapella orgasm that ends "This Whole World," the pass-the-mic lead vocals on "Add Some Music," the sweet sincerity of "All I Wanna Do," the charming kook of "At My Window." SURF'S UP isn't quite up to snuff; I'd have rather had Dennis's long unreleased "Barbara" than "A Day in the Life of a Tree." But Carl's two contributions and Bruce's "Disney Girls" are fan faves. And three words explain why SURF'S UP is ultimately a must have: "Til I Die." One of Brian Wilson's greatest, it's an evocation of loneliness that'll leave me moved til --- well---til I die.

Free Music Review: Till i die this will be my favorite beach boys album
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember when i was at school and people use to ask me what music i liked i would always say the beach boys. I went to school in the early 1990'S in the Uk and the beach boys were not regarded as the coolest band. Anyway, one time a kid asked m what music i liked and i told him and he started to laugh and sing Surfing USA in a mocking way. i remember thinking how little he must know about the beach boys. I wanted to tell him about surfs up and how brilliant an album it was, but i though what is the point he was too preoccupied with, take that and aqua's barbie girl. Although i love all beach boys music i think these two albums are where the beach boys really matured. The production is perfect and does not detract from the music as do som of teh later over produced albums. THese albums tak you on a rollercoaster of emotions from happy and enchanting songs like add some music... to serene songs like 'cool water' and songs that make you question your very existence like till i die. Bruce Johnston's Disney girls is also a particular highlight. Add this album to your day. Fantastic.

Free Music Review: TWO BEAUTIFUL HARMONIAL BEACH BOYS GEMS. THE BEACH BOYS CONTINUED TO HAVE VERY CREATIVE OUTPUT DURING 1970-1971
Hit: 5 Stars

These two album releases are truly among the Beach Boys best. The remastering of "Sunflower/Surf's Up" is beautifully done. Beautiful harmonies, well written songs. Despite Brian Wilsons appearent demons at this time of 1970-1971. Brians contributions to these two albums are magnificent. My favorite song is the 1920s Charleston sounding "Deidre", beautifully written as the harmonies are incredible, not just on "Diedre" but on both albums. "Sunflower/Surf's Up" speaks volumes of harmony, rock and a little big band thrown in.
There is some really great guitar work on these two albums. "Till I Die" is considered to be Brian Wilsons last great song with the Beach Boys and what an awesome song it is. The title track "Surfs Up" is a beautiful well composed song. Bottom line, both of these Beach Boys recordings are gems, that are even highly regarded in England. The linear notes are informative. The Beach Boys were continuing some very creative material output during the early 1970s, these two Beach Boy gems capture that Music Review: Two by Sun Or Sea, But None By Land
Hit: 5 Stars Getting these albums together is a great idea, since they're so important but also have big overlapping associations to each other. This is obvious in the good new interview with Brian included in the booklet (but, hey how come this is the only Capitol Brother reissue in which we get a Brian interview?) However, comments made by others on this page about the so-called "Landlocked" album project are incorrect. As the booklet accurately says, that name was under consideration for just a little while as a title for "Surf 's Up," but other theories about it were just fuled by dumb rumors and booklegs, the most recent in 1990. And one lineup circulated with an ad was a big hoax. As Bruce Johnston has admitted, fans have really taken some jokey remarks in interviews over the years too seriously. But the music always speaks for itself, and this music here is remastered now to a new level you couldn't hear on the vinyl copies, so it's truly fabulous to own.

Free Music Review: The best of the Brother Record reissues?
Hit: 5 Stars

Over the past few years I have found many of the Brother Records releases on vinyl so the content of these two albums is familiar to me. Capitol has done an excellent remastering job with these two worthy entries into the Beach Boys catalogue (both songwriting and production wise). Sunflower has a somewhat stronger song line-up of the two but in comparison with their albums of the late 70's, Surf's Up is a masterpiece as well. If you've heard disk III of the Good Vibrations Box, you know the highlights (but the rest of the tracks are also worthwhile).

The liner notes are quite informative. Each song receives comment. I was particularly interested to learn about the songs that didn't make the final cut for Sunflower.

I believe this will ultimately turn out to be the highlight of this reissue series (although Holland and Love You are also great) so if you aren't necessarily planning to buy them all, this is the place to start.
