Free Music Notes for Sunflower / Surf's UpFree Music Review: Fell in love with This Whole World Hit: 5 Stars
It was the summer of 1974. I was 16 and brought my first copy of Sunflower home from the record store. I could not wait to rip the wrapper off the album and place it on my record player. The only problem is it took me a week to get past `This Whole World'. Carl's voice and the boy's harmonies along with the catchy breaks and the bells, pipes and organ just blew me away. I later got around to listening to the rest of the album and also fell in love with 'Our Sweet Love' and 'At My Window'. There is not a week track on Sunflower and this album remains my all time favorite Beach Boy's album. Surf's up on the other hand took some getting use to. I bought my first copy of this album around the same time in 1974. The three Brian Wilson songs are the best tracks on the album.
Free Music Review: Surf'sUp Forever in This Whole Whole Hit: 5 Stars
These are the LPs that brought Beach Boys fans back to the fold , converted non-believers and showed that Brian's genius spread amongst his disciples . That all the members , especially Dennis , could at times write good enough songs to fill in Brian's shadow is an accomplishment that even George and Ringo never had thrust upon them . There are those Brian fans in our midst (I , for one) who feel that Sunflower is the equal of Pet Sounds . Not in inventiveness or orchestration , perhaps , but in song quality and durability . And Surf's Up is no slouch , either . Sunflower seems filled with light and Surf's Up , with dark , so this is a perfect pairing . For anyone who needed proof that the BBs were , indeed , a band and not just Brian's marionettes ....here it is !
Free Music Review: Both Excellent Albums ! The magic is still there! Hit: 5 Stars
I enjoyed both Sunflower/Surf's Up. It contained many beautiful ballads by the boys On Sunflower like Dennis Wilsons' Classic Forever and Brian Wilson's This Whole World which display some positivity despite their personal problems they were going through at the time. On Surf's Up, Till I die and Surf's Up are mournful ballads in which it seems Brian Wilson is saying goodbye to innocence. Despite these being great albums, they did not have a chance. In the world's madness of 1970-71 and the boys being written off as unhip, these albums were ignored. But now time has passed. It seems that the boys were ahead of their time once again. These albums have aged gracefully. Would recommend this set to a Beach Boy Fan
Free Music Review: Dennis' writing and vocal abilities finally get to shine.... Hit: 5 Stars
This is probably the best CD to showcase Dennis' singing and writing abilities. Always thought to be the groups 'Sex Symbol', he was never given the true credit he deserved for his beautiful singing and songwriting. His masterfully written and pleasing rendition of "Forever" definitely proves his competence, proficiency, expertise, skill, ingenuity, and wealth of talent. Anyone who has ever met Dennis, knows this CD shows his playful side, too, especially in "Got To Know The Woman." This CD is definitely a "Keeper" and a must have for anyone who considers themselves a true Beach Boy, or a Dennis Wilson fan! The Beach Boys live on FOREVER with this CD.
Free Music Review: It's about time Hit: 5 Stars
I've searched high and low for Sunflower, and thank goodness it's finally on CD. After hearing for years how great this album is, I am not disappointed. In fact, I'm overjoyed. Dennis Wilson is the hero of this record, contributing some of his best songs and performances. Bruce Johnston also comes up big time. Surf's Up isn't as strong, and the first eight songs are overshadowed a bit by the last two songs, the overwhelming double shot of Til I Die and Surf's Up. The album is still really good and among the most consistent Beach Boys discs. This and In Concert are the most essential of the new twofers. Thanks Capitol for finally getting your act together.
