Free Music Review: What happened to great music?

"Surfer Girl/ShutDown, Vol. 2" is probablly one of the best two-fer packs out there. It has an even mixture of both surf tunes, and car tunes, and not tons of corny lyrical songs, plus a couple cover songs thrown in the mix.

"Surfer Girl": Ah, the soothing sound of the title track is so relaxing to listen to anytime, quite people down at a party, or just for relaxation in your home. Next comes the classic (and original mind you) "Catch A Wave", a very strong song, musically and verbally. Later style of the song borrowed by Jan & Dean for their skateboarding song "Sidewalk Surfin". Also featured on here is the great ballad "In My Room", with their great harmonies reflecting in this song. "Hawaii", the fun/up-beat surf song of how all of them want to go to Hawaii with a girl, great song. "Our Car Club" is also featured on this album as well, and is just great, I love the opening with Dennis' drums. I take it back, there are some corny songs on here, but no major corny lyrical songs on this two-fer. The ever so powerful ballad "Don't Worry Baby" probablly the boy's best ballad of all, with that electric guitar solo for the "bridge". "Keep An Eye On Summer", also re-sung by Brian on his album "Imagination" (also a recommendation) is on this album, a great slow song another favorite. There is a great rendition of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" sung by Brian on lead, which is alsmost as good, if not better than the original version, who's artist name doesnt ring a bell right now. Another cover, also very well done is "Louie, Louie", it's a slower take than another version they sung on another Beach Boys album, live or in studio, where as I prefer this one much better. "This Car of Mine" is where Dennis takes lead vocals and talks about how no matter what, he wont sell his old-beat-up car. "Denny's Drums" is a fantastic display of Dennis Wilson's fabulous drum skills as the backbone of the group. Bonus tracks include a mono version of "Fun, Fun, Fun", a German version of "In My Room", still has those harmonies even in another language. And a track called "I Do", where the singer's parents dont want him and his girlfriend to be married.

This is another good two-fer set. Oh, and I made a mistake on another album review. This cd holds "Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson" which is a verbal battle between Mike and Brian making fun of how each other sings, the other album I did a review on "Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long", isn't Love vs. Wilson, but on this two-fer it is. I apologize for the mix-up.

I highly recommend this album for any Beach Boy fan, you will surley enjoy it.

Their 1963 chart-topper (#7) and their car-crazy release from 1964 on 27-track extravaganza! A single version of Fun, Fun, Fun , a German version of In My Room and I Do are the bonus tracks.
Surfer Girl may have been the band's third album release, but it was the first to bear the imprimatur of founder and creative mainstay Brian Wilson as producer, and the difference is palpable from the confident opening tracks onward. That one-two combo, "Surfer Girl" and "Catch a Wave," also effectively serves as the blueprint for much of the Beach Boys' subsequent sound. On the former, Wilson's falsetto soars over a tender, yet musically sophisticated, ballad, while the latter features Mike Love's trademark twang urgently proselytizing SoCal surf, both over band harmonies that seemed to grow tighter and more adventurous with every cut. That artistic axis is revisited yet again on "Little Deuce Coupe" and "In My Room," the latter ballad showcasing Wilson's full artistic arsenal and giving an early glimpse into his introspective soul. The curiously titled "Shut Down, Part II" (a de facto sequel to an earlier hit EP) sought to further the band beyond its ironic sea-and-sun fetish (none but Dennis Wilson ever surfed) into the burgeoning hot-rod subculture as well. The results were understandably uneven, but the high points remain nothing short of spectacular, including the Love-propelled "Fun, Fun, Fun," Wilson's knowing nod to Phil Spector, "Don't Worry Baby," and the underrated "The Warmth of the Sun." Bonus cuts include the single mix of "Fun, Fun, Fun," a German-language version of "In My Room," and the previously unreleased, largely experimental "I Do" by Wilson and Love. Brian offers up a brief commentary on both albums in the notes, while David Leaf (author of the pioneering bio The Beach Boys and the California Myth) documents the music track-by-track. --Jerry McCulley
