Free Music Notes for Today/ Summer Days (and Summer Nights)Free Music Review: MAN IT'S SO EERIE IT'S SCARY!!! DEFINITLY TWO VERY INFLUENTIAL BEACH BOYS RECORDINGS....THE PRE START OF MID 1960S PSYCHEDELIA Hit: 5 Stars
These two Beach Boys albums were released in 1965. "The Beach Boys Today" in March 1,1965 and "Summer Days(and Summer Nights")on June 28th 1965 before the Beatles "Rubbersoul" release on Dec.3,1965. And it's eerie how "Rubbersoul" sounds simular to "Today" and "Summer days and Summer Nights" in instrumantation and vocals on some tracks. The Beach Boys were experimenting with psychedelic sound on these two records and definetly had an influence on Rubbersoul. The remastering is superb and a sonic joy to listen to these more than forty year old recordings. The track from the album "Today" "In The Back Of My Mind" shows you where Brian Wilsons mind was musically in 1965. It may be just me, when I hear the Beatles album "Rubbersoul" and listen to the track "Nowhere Man" and then listen to the Beach Boys album "Summer Days" and hear the track "And Your Dreams Come True" the simularities harmonously are strikingly simular, it so eerie it's scary!!!!!!!! I like Capitals idea of putting these two Beach Boy records on one 24 bit remasterd cd. Excellent interesting linear notes. This is a must for any Beach Boy fan or music fan. I would bet the whole wall street bank of money the Beatles and Sir George Martin were listening to these two Beach Boys albums during their "Rubbersoul" sessions. Great stuff from Music Review: Two great mid sixties albums Hit: 5 Stars
This twofer covers the period leading up to Pet sounds. Some of the tracks were cut in 1964 but most date from 1965. Do you wanna dance was the first big hit of the period. It a rock'n'roll classic that Brits first heard when Cliff Richard had a hit with it, but it was originally an American hit for Bobby Freeman. Another cover hit was Then I kissed her, an adaptation of the Crystals' Then he kissed me.Original songs yielded four American A-side hits, these being When I grow up, Help me Rhonda (a number one), California girls (one of their most famous songs) and The little girl I once knew. I could have done without Bull session with the Big Daddy - it is just the Beach boys and a journalist chatting to each other. This sort of thing is fine for liner notes, but I don't want it on a CD. Still, its only one track and can easily be skipped. Alternate recordings are included of some songs. Perhaps the most interesting is the original Help me Ronda (note the spelling of Ronda) which appeared on the Today album. It was substantially changed musically before being released as the single Help me Rhonda (with the spelling change also) - that version was included on the Summer days album. All the other tracks are typical Beach boys music of the period - two classic albums from one of the most important sixties groups.
Free Music Review: Great Album Hit: 5 Stars
Both of these albums are very good, although I think Today! is the better of the two. This is hands down a great album that has something to offer for every beach boys fan. The first side is filled with some fun rockers, such as "Good to my baby", "Dance Dance Dance", and a nice version of "Help me Rhonda" with harmonicas and some cool volume changes. The second side is filled with some of Brian's prettiest ballads, such as "Please Let Me Wonder" and "In The Back of my mind." The second side of this album really sets the stage for Pet Sounds. The Summer Days (and Summer Nights!) album isn't quite as good as Today! in my opinion, but it's definitely a fun album that is worth listening to and has some great songs on it, such as "You're so Good to me", "California Girls", "Let Him Run Wild," and "Girl Don't Tell Me", as well as the hit version of "Help Me Rhonda." This is definitely a must-have album if you are a Beach Boys fan. It's my favorite after Pet Sounds. Speaking of Pet Sounds, if you haven't gotten ticktets yet for the Brian Wilson/Al Jardine tour, get them! I just got mine, and I've never been this excited for anything! It should be an absolutely fabulous concert!
Free Music Review: Back to Back Beach Boys Hit: 5 Stars
By 1965 Brian Wilson was charting new ground with innovations in the studio, after informing the group that he was through with performing on stage.Today! is the stronger of the two albums on this CD. Starting off with Do You Wanna Dance, it quickly evolves into the sophisticated pop of When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) and Help Me, Rhonda (LP version). Tracks 7 through 11, or the second side of this LP, are an echo of the majesty evident on Pet Sounds. Summer Days is worth listening if only for jewels like Then I Kissed Her, Help Me, Rhonda (single record version), and the classic California Girls. The record ends in the lush harmonies of And Your Dream Come True. There are some stunning bonus tracks, as well: The Little Girl I Once Knew (single), Dance, Dance, Dance (alternate take), I'm So Young (alternate take), Let Him Run Wild (alternate take) and Graduation Day (studio version). During the Beach Boys fine run, they were ecliped by the British Invasion, and so their contributions can be overlooked. Almost thirty years later, Brian Wilson's legacy of flawless harmonies and adolescent odes remain a lesson of how to create pop masterpieces.
Free Music Review: The first solid Beach Boys album Hit: 5 Stars
"Today", released in 1965, shows the Beach Boys determined to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Beatles by releasing not only great singles, but great albums. The first side of the album contains your standard Beach Boys fare, "Do You Wanna Dance", "Help Me Ronda", "Dance, Dance, Dance"....good songs but nothing terribly groundbreaking. Side two, however, which opens with "Please Let Me Wonder" is another story altogether. Brian Wilson admitted that this was the first batch of songs he wrote "under the influence" and it shows. The songs on side two would sound right at home on "Pet Sounds" and are brilliantly constructed. I personally think "She Knows Me Too Well" is one of the single greatest songs ever written and recorded by the Beach Boys. For some reason, the progress Brian started to make on "Today" was temporarily abandoned on "Summer Days". There are great songs, "California Girls" and "Girl Dont Tell Me", but again there is little innovation. Two really good albums and the start of the Beach Boys creative rise.
