Free Music Notes for Today/ Summer Days (and Summer Nights)Free Music Review: Growing Up, But Not Old Hit: 5 Stars
The Beach Boys Today and Summer Days & Summer Nights show the amazing ability of Brian Wilson. Today is full of more mature songs like "Please Let Me Wonder", "She Knows Me Too Well", "I'm So Young" and "Good To My Baby" which have a more adult and intricate sound, but on Summer Days he shows can still produce catchy, fun songs like the unforgettable "California Girls", "You're So Good To Me", "Amusement Parks USA" and their second number one single "Help Me, Rhonda". That song also appears on Today, but in a different version that has a false ending and is slower. You can tell he thought there was a hit there as he speeded up the pace and made it move along quicker and his instincts were right. Other standouts include "Dance, Dance, Dance", "Then She Kissed Me", the soaring "Let Him Run Wild" and the amazing, thoughtful, masterfully arranged "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)".
Free Music Review: One of the best places to start a Beach Boys collection Hit: 5 Stars
1965 was a prime year for rock/pop music, and arguably its most gifted exponent, Brian Wilson. This "two-fer" covers most of the serious music Brian put together that year, and it is quite a collection! In many ways, this is the best place to start a Beach Boys collection. You have the massive hits (California Girls, Help Me Rhonda) to show that Brian was perfectly capable of hitting very close to the top of the charts. And then there are the aching ballads, the songs about love being more than just a game, that point the way to Pet Sounds (Please Let Me Wonder, She Knows Me Too Well and more). Add a little fun (Amusement Parks USA, I'm Bugged At My Old Man) and romance (Summer Means New Love, And Your Dream Comes True), the most advanced 45 of 1965 (Little Girl I Once Knew) and the most poignant song about time and growing up (When I Grow Up To Be A Man). The result..not only an essential start to a Beach Boys collection, but an essential understanding of the progression of 60s music.
Free Music Review: Wonderful CD Hit: 5 Stars
If my apartment was on fire, this and Pet Sounds would be two of the CDs I would grab if I could.Today is fantastic. The first side is the more commercial, with highlights such as Help Me Rhonda and Dance, Dance, Dance. Songs such as When I Grow Up to Be A Man have great lyrics as well. Then there is side 2--amazing songs, beautifully executed, and flowing seemlessly together, as would Pet Sounds in the future. Kiss Me Baby is one of BW's best; I was surprised when it was not included on the GV box set. Summer Days is more commefcial--but still extremely good. It lacks the cohensiveness of Today, but many of individual songs are excellent. Besides, how can you not appreciate a CD that contains California Girls?...if only there were pictures... Additionally, these recordings have been remastered, are a bargain, and show the complexity of the Beach Boys at their best. What's not to like?
Free Music Review: The Precursors to Pet Sounds- GREAT! Hit: 5 Stars
I Love these two albums. They rank among the finest in the Beach Boys catalog. Key tracks are the Hits-Claifornia Girls, Help Me Rhonda, When I Grow Up, Dance Dance Dance, And Do you wanna Dance; other key trracks are The Girl From NYC, Girl Don't Tell Me, Kiss Me Baby, and Let Him Run Wild. These two albums are so different from the surfin theme that the Beach Boys were known for by now. I love these albums for their sence of modernity and experimentation. As mentioned in the title, they are the precursors to Pet Sounds. It was here that Brian Wilson began making arrangements that made him the renowned musician that he is so Known for today. Take Let Him Run Wild: it is cleary the bridge from Summer Days to Pet Sounds. Brian is truly a genius. Buy this album...it's worth every penny.
Free Music Review: Classic Beach Boys Hit: 5 Stars
Some of their best work is on this CD.
"Today" has alot of tracks that would have fit perfectly onto "Pet Sounds".
"Summer Days(and Summer Nights)" is a step backward towards cruising, surfing and beach bunnies...but there are still some quality tracks on here!
Some of my favorite tracks include...
- Good To My Baby
- Please Let Me Wonder
- I'm So Young
- Kiss Me Baby
- She Knows me Too Well
- Help Me Rhonda
- California Girls
- Let Him Run Wild
- Summer Means New Love
- And Your Dreams Come True
- The Little Girl I Once Knew
Their best work was still to come with "Pet Sounds", but these two albums give you an idea of where they were heading...
