After Brian had his nervous breakdown and retired from touring he put together the brilliant TODAY album.It beautifully merges the three BB worlds!From teenaged rockers like DO YOU WANNA DANCE to the more sophisticated songs like WHEN I GROW UP TO BE A MAN to the lush and almost spiritual quality to the songs of 7-11 that were the LPs second side that nod to the haunting beauty to come(PET SOUNDS).SUMMER DAYS came next and doesn't reach the same level.It sounds rushed and un-finished.There are good songs,of course,but there are songs that sound half-hearted.Worth buying,though.TODAY is beauty!Free Music Review: Better Than Pet Sounds

You heard me: Today! and Summer Days are better than Pet Sounds. And having them combined into one disc is better than anything. I think Brian's strongest ideas are on these two releases. They have more of the emotional depth that would come with Pet Sounds yet still retain the precise, clean propulsive pop energy you would find with earlier singles. The lush orchestrations of Pet Sounds are fine and dandy but nothing on that album compares to the performance of a track like "Girl Don't Tell Me". THE BEACH BOYS TODAY , SUMMER DAYS & NIGHTS AND THE ALL SUMMER LONG ALBUMS ARE THREE OF MY B.B.FAVORITES.
NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SONGS (WHICH ARE KILLER)! BUT IT WAS THE AGE AND TIME THAT I WAS GROWING UP IN.LISTENING TO THOSE TWO ALBUMS PUTS ME BACK IN SIXTH GRADE WHEN THE BEATLES AND THE BEACH BOYS UNINTENTIONLY SET ME ON THE PATH TO BE A MUSICIAN.FORTY YEARS LATER, I'M STILL DRUMMIN' AND TO THE SONGS THAT I GREW UP WITH AND LOVE.

this CD proves that these guys were more than just surf band--they were the pinacle of pop music in the 60's and beyond. Who else wrote such beautiful melodies and rich harmonies with instrumental back-up with such finesse than Brian Wilson? Buy this CD and forget about the "best-of" compilations. I went for years thinking that I had heard the "best-of" before buying actual albums in their entirety. It was only then that I discovered that pretty much everything they did was "the Best"! I love these guys!
