Free Music Review: A Great Collection of Early Beatles Material Hit: 4 StarsI would definitely recommend this set (along with the follow up: "1967-1970" set) for the casual fan who wants a nice collection of Beatles hits, without having to buy all of the original studio albums. I never used to like the Beatles. But, having entered my 30s, I have grown quite fond of their music. There is no denying the fact that they were musical geniuses and have had a tremendous impact on several generations. My only complaint is that the record company "milked" the consumer by spreading 60 minutes of material over 2 CDs and charged over $30 for it. However, when you take a look at the quality of material here and the impact the Beatles have had on pop music and culture, it almost seems like a fair price.
Free Music Review: Suggestion for re-release Hit: 1 StarsBottom line: 62 minutes isn't worth 35 dollars, if the 80-minute "1" sells for 9.99 at Target. But this set is great; not a single album, with the exception of Revolver is essential. This set takes all of the good songs. Yes, Rubber Soul was great, but this set has 6 of its songs. Revolver was great too, and many have commented on the fact that only two songs here are from Revolver; that wasn't a singles album. The bule set has many tracks from albums where you need to own the album (Sgt. Peppers, The White Album, Abbey Road), but this is the definitive chronicle of the Beatles from 1962-1966. The re-release should be on a single disc, and sell for between 10 and 15 dollars; I recomend that the liner notes keep the lyrics and photos, and add the album covers. Here is the definitive album (around 70 minutes):
1. Love Me Do
2. Please Please Me
3. Twist and Shout
4. Money (That's What I Want)
5. Roll Over Beethoven
6. From Me to You
7. She Loves You
8. I Want to Hold Your Hand
9. All My Loving
10. Can't Buy Me Love
11. Hard Day's Night
12. And I Love Her
13. Eight Days a Week
14. I Feel Fine
15. Ticket to Ride
16. Yesterday
17. Help!
18. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
19. We Can Work It Out
20. Day Tripper
21. Drive My Car
22. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
23. Nowhere Man
24. Michelle
25. In My Life
26. Girl
27. Paperback Writer
28. Eleanor Rigby
29. Yellow Submarine
P.S.: I would have included more 'Revolver' tracks; I think it is criminally underrepresented, but after 'Elanor Rigby' and 'Yellow Submarine,' I wouldn't know what to pick; it's a non-compilation-oriented album. You should probably pick it up, even if you are a casual fan.
Free Music Review: Great music, but Apple/Capitol is ripping us off! Hit: 1 StarsIn 1973 Apple/Capitol released the RED and the Blue albums,to chronicle the Beatles career. When released on vinyl the Red album was a two record set. However in the age of the compact disc,Apple/Capitol decided that they should release a 60 minute album(80 minutes of music can fit on a single CD)in a two CD set and sale it for about $32.00, when in all reality it should sale for $10-$14. All the hits you would expect are present, but the price of the CD is poor, and the sound quality could be better. I recommend purchasing The Beatles 1 instead.
Free Music Review: Fanstastic Music But Horrible "Bang for the Buck" Hit: 3 StarsMusic: 5 stars; Economic Value: 1 StarNot counting the Anthology albums in the 90's (which are not hit compilations anyway), the Beatles have in the last 30 years been compiled only once, on 2000's "1", an excellent overview for what it is, their best known and biggest hits. The 1973 "Red" and "Blue" compilations remain in print, and I guess are still selling. While the "Blue" 1967-1970 compilation justifies its continued availibility on 2 CDs, one really has to question why the "Red" 1962-1966 compilation does. "The Beatles 1962-1966" (26 tracks) clocks in at 62 min., way below the capacity of a single CD, yet remains on the shelf as 2 CDs (along with a heftly $31 retail price). This is nothing short of ripping off the buying public, in my opinion. The reason given by the label management is "to keep the integruity of the original vinyl issue", but is anyone really buying this? Shame on them! The music on the "Red" album is of course stellar, that's not the point. Maybe it's too soon yet after the "1" compilation, but hasn't the time come for a definitve 2CD compilation of the Beatles, along the lines of, say, "The Essential Bob Dylan", maximising the capability of 80 min. of a CD?
