Free Music Notes for 1962-1966 (The Red Album)Free Music Review: Shame on you Capitol Records... Hit: 2 StarsFirst off,as far as the music is concerned the album deserves a full 5.I don't care if certain songs are in mono or stereo as long as they sound good.
Second off,for some reason unbeknownst to me,Capitol Records chose to put "1962-1966" out as two discs. It could have very easily fit on one disc, thereby slashing some of this re-issue's HUGE overprice.Capitol Records is why I'm only giving this album 2 stars.
Third and finally,"Revolver" was poorly represented.Capitol could have added a couple of tracks from that album as bonus selections.
Free Music Review: Too little music for the money Hit: 3 StarsYes, this is the lineup that was on it when the album was first released but since it's a 'greatest hits' album...not a proper album...there's no reason not to upgrade it to the modern era.(Maintaining continuity doesn't matter when it was never CONCEIVED as a group of songs anyway.)
CD capacity is 80 minutes, so Capitol/EMI could EASILY have combined the tracks onto one disc and then lowered the price accordingly about $10 bucks. If they wanted to keep it as a 2 CD set of "early years" material, they should have added a LOT of extra music for your $30.
BOTTOM LINE:
It's hard to quibble with what's on here as a representation of early Beatles music (save "Girl" from "Rubber Soul" which is one of the least interesting album tracks there..swapping it with "You Won't See Me" would have been a better call) but EMI should have seized the capabilities of the CD to make one really good disc...or expanded the offerings on both to come closer to at LEAST 45 minutes per disc. What's here is shameful on a strictly "music for the money" basis. If you have to get this, get it used, but you're probably better off with the "1s" disc if you're just a casual fan.
5 star music but docked 2 stars for the consumer gouging= 3 stars
Free Music Review: YEAH, YEAH, YEAH YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE THE BEATLES Hit: 5 StarsMy original rating is 4.5 due to the shameless way this album is sold and the justification is preserving the original format of the album. But hey, it's the Beatles, in all their glory going from a reckless band breaking in a new drummer(Love Me Do, Please, Please Me) to a more polished act(I Wanna Hold Your Hand, A Hard Days Night) and breaking new grounds(Yesterday, We Can Work It Out)and pushing the barriers of pop music(RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, Paperback Writer). From reading most of the reviews, it seems the Beatles have somewhat falling out of favor, especially by those who weren't born during the Beatles reign was born six months after their break-up and the Beatles still are as influential to me as REM & Beck. Some say "they weren't great musician, the songs were corny, they're outdated".Judging them by today standards this may be true. But if it weren't for the Beatles, pop music would be a very uninteresting place. Sure John's chord strumming was a bit repetitive at times, George's leads were copied from Chuck Berry & Scotty Moore(who's weren't)and Ringo's drumming had nothing on Keith Moon. But what they lacked in chops, they made up for in the music. Sure it started out as "bubblegum" at first ,but their songs evolved and became more complexed. As they pushed the boundaries of songwriting (using modes, and changing keys in off the cuff places)their use of the recording studio was amazing as well as their experimenting with other instrument(the string quartet on Yesterday & the sitar on Norwiegian Wood).Maybe those of you who dis The Beatles should remember that some of these things we take for granted in music were pioneered by them. And for every uptight snooty band more interested in finding the lost chord should remember that the one's who lack in musicianship are the ones who are the most ingenius (REM, The Velvet Underground...).
Free Music Review: My first experience with the Beatles Hit: 5 StarsI had first heard of the Beatles when I saw Ringo Starr on Shining Time Station when I was a kid. I heard about Octopus'Garden and Yellow Submarine. My uncle had this CD and played "Yellow Submarine" back in 1997 or 1998 and I checked it out from the library a few times in 1999 and I grew to be a huge Beatles fan. This album has most of their early songs digitally remastered and at top sound quality. The one problem with Beatles is there were so many hits that they have no good greatest hits album, you have to buy all kinds of albums to get all of their good songs. This album is one of those albums easily worth the money.
Free Music Review: The Red album Hit: 4 StarsAssembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records.
