Free Music Notes for Anthology 1

Free Music Review: Excellent Collector's Item- for Beatlemaniacs only!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Beatles- "Anthology 1" two disc set is an excellent purchase- for Beatlemaniacs. Beatles beginners should get their feet wet with a general career spanning best of set like "1" or "Past Masters". This is to spark initial interest with can't miss recordings. "Anthology 1" is for collectors. Many of the songs have inferior sound due to the fact they were shelved away and never officially recorded. However, the historic value of many of these tracks is remarkable. The Decca session recordings that were rejected are here. Two of the Beatles' first recordings done at Abbey Road studios are here, including a spicy cover of "Besame Mucho." Other notable gems include 2 tracks recorded by the Beatles as the Tony Sheridan backing band when they lived in Germany, the early and best version of "One After 909" (it would later appear on the "Let it Be" record), and several recordings from the famous London Palladium show. And, you get the new track, "Free As a Bird," which comes off as a solid yet unspectacular piece. All in all, "Anthology 1" is a great collectors item. The historical value in the recordings is significant. But it should also be noted that it is not a good starting point for those just stumbling into the Beatles' work because the numbers are often roughly recorded and aren't necessarily their best output. Highly recommended for Beatlemaniacs.

Free Music Review: As a Hadcore Fan 5 Stars, But Not For The Casual Fan
Hit: 3 Stars

If you want to hear outakes and rare tracks by The Beatles because you are a big fan this will be great(like it was for me). But if you only casually listen to the band you would probably be better off with 1. And if you want to find out more about the bands history I would recomend the Anthology dvd's which is actually better than the cds in my opinion.

And I would also like to state that I love Free As A Bird. I think people are to hard on it. I think it is a great song and even though John's voice isn't the clearest I like the way it sounds(very haughnting). After all let's not forget it cracked the top 20 on billboard, not bad for three old guys and someone who had died almost 15 years earlier.

Free Music Review: Historic Beatles
Hit: 5 Stars

Included on this CD are rare, never-before-released outtakes of the Beatles' best-known recordings...with extras thrown in. It opens with a new song called "Free As a Bird." Though not as good as "Real Love" (released on the second Anthology), it is interesting to hear. Then we transition into the mid 1950s when John, Paul and George made their first record, a cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day." It and its B-side are presented here in great quality. Then we hear three home recordings from Paul's garage in 1960, followed by Hamburg, Decca, and finally outtakes from the EMI studio. There are also many live recordings on the CDs, from the London Palladium, Royal Variety Show, and Ed Sullivan. Alternate takes from "A Hard Day's Night" and "Beatles for Sale" round out disc 2. This is a very good and historically a very interesting set. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: The previously unreleased early Beatles
Hit: 5 Stars

Beatles fans got a very nice treat in late 1995. That was the first king-size collection of some of the Beatles' previously unreleased recordings, alternate versions and some goofs. We begin with FREE AS A BIRD which is not completely new. It began with the late John Lennon recording the song in 1977 and eighteen years later, added instrumentation with Paul McCartney,Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison(Harrison died in 2001). So the first Beatles recording in 25 years was born. Lennon's widow Yoko Ono gave Lennon's recording of FAAB to Paul,George and Ringo. This album features interview excerpts, given by Lennon,McCartney and the Beatles' late manager Brian Epstein. Some tracks were recorded as early as 1960. Some of them were monaural tape recordings. Some tracks were even recorded live.

Free Music Review: If you're new to the Beatles, this AIN'T the place to start!
Hit: 5 Stars

Contains the amazing, heartbreaking "Free As A Bird" that shows the Beatles still had the magic thirty years after they'd broken up! What a finally crafted song! An immaculate production, also, seeing how they started with Lennon's crappy home demo and sculpted it into perfection. What a great way to top off the Beatles career!

But that is the only new song here, and it's the only song with sterling production qualities. The other songs are demos and out-takes and historical recordings. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO START IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE BEATLES (Instead, buy Rubber Soul, Revolver, or Abbey Road).

However, if you have already explored the Beatles "real" recordings, the stuff they actually CHOSE to release, and you want to know where the Beatles started and how they grew into the monsters they became, this collection will set you straight. I love it! (Even though it is the weakest of the three anthologies.)

REMEMBER: These anthologies are NOT "Greatest Hits" collections. They aren't even the final versions of the songs that the Beatles released on their real albums. The anthologies are OUT-TAKES and historical recordings of interest to serious Beatles devotees. Don't make the same mistake my dumb girl-friend made -- she wanted to find out what the Beatles were like and so she went out an bought a Beatles album -- this one! WRONG!
