Free Music Notes for Anthology 3

Free Music Review: Simply the Beatles
Hit: 5 Stars

Easily my favorite of the Anthology series, 3 captures the last years of the machine known as The Beatles. Kind of a "Beatles Unplugged" to kick of the first disc, featuring a series of demos done at George Harrison's home. There is true beauty in the simplicity of the tracks, displaying their true power. The same is throughout the 2 discs, displaying the songs at the barest, but no effect is lost. Harrison really shines here with an oustanding demo of his "Not Guilty" in electric form along with the most breathtaking track of all, his acoustic demo of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that displays such a closeness that Harrison had for his new composition, as if he put every once of himself into making this track one of his best. The alternates of the "Let It Be" material also shine, here in their intended, bare-bones selves. This is truly hsitoric material and essential to intense and casual Beatles fans alike.

Free Music Review: Look...
Hit: 4 Stars

Many people are disappointed because they see hits like "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be" and expect it to be a best-of collection - no, it's an assortment of rarities & alternate takes, and intended for the fans who want to catch an earful of Beatles that they haven't yet heard after these thirty or so years since the band stopped making new music together.

And as far as such collections go, this is very nice. The alternate takes can be strange, but they can also give well-known songs brand new life. The new songs are excellent. It should satisfy the fans, which the Beatles had many of. Casual listeners may be dismayed at the stripped-down performances and unfinished thoughts - but that's what this album is supposed to be. It's not a greatest hits package, it's a bunch of songs that have yet to be released or odd versions of the classics. On that level, it is a success.

Free Music Review: Don't be Disappointed
Hit: 1 Stars

I purchased this CD to listen to a favorite song by the Beatles, "Because" and I was so disappointed, because it seemed like a very brief rendition of the orginal. The entire CD seems like it's a rendition and not by the Beatles themselves. I recall the Beatles music in the 1960s and this CD just doesn't measure up to what I remember. For someone who never experienced the Beatles when they were actively singing, they may not notice the difference, and would not be disappointed. The sound is good but the songs just don't seem like the original stuff. I overpaid and was very disappointed.

Free Music Review: Wow
Hit: 5 Stars

This, as well as the previous two anthologies is very neat. I really like the Beatles and this is a very good album to own. It has some of their greatest songs. I suggest you buy all of the Beatles albums, but if you can't swing that, then go with this and #1 and #2.

Free Music Review: The Beatles Unplugged
Hit: 4 Stars

There are many beautiful demos of the White Album on disc 1, while disc 2 covers the Let It Be/Abbey Road period.

My only problem with both discs is the inclusion of mediocre outtakes of average McCartney songs like Rocky Racoon (on this take he flubs the lines, but plods on anyhow) and Maxwell's Silver Hammer (one of Paul's granny songs, as John Lennon would wryly point out).

However, you can hear crystal clear studio versions of unrealeased tracks What's The New Mary Jane and Not Guilty, as well as a hauntingly beautiful All Things Must Pass; all three should have been included on one of their last three albums, instead of mediocrities like Octopuss, Maxwell, Rocky Racoon and the like.

I agree with George Harrison that of the three anthology sets, this is the most interesting, in that it covers their studio years where they could hone their talents without the distraction of concerts and the like. Unfortunately, by disc 2 side two the well had almost ran dry, so there is less revealing material than on the first disc, with the exception of George's demo of Something.

Again, buy the original albums first, then Past Masters 1 & 2, and finally consider the anthology sets in that order.
