Free Music Review: The Beatles: Anthology Volume Three (1996)
Hit: 5 Stars

In October of 1996, The Beatles released their 32nd album entitled, ANTHOLOGY VOLUME THREE, yet another sequel into their Anthology series. This album features the last of The Beatles' hits, as well as what seems to be the last of their unreleased tracks and bootlegs.

Free Music Review: Second Best In The Anthology Series
Hit: 5 Stars

The third in The Beatles' "Anthology" series is the second best in the series, closly behind "Anthology 2". This closing volume in the series contains material from their last two years, 1968 to 1970, which means you will hear a lot of great, never before heard material from arguably their two best albums, their self- titled 1968 release (better known as "The White Album") and the last album they ever recorded (and the greatest album ever made IMO), "Abbey Road", as well as outtakes from "Let It Be" and a few never before heard demos and what not.

Disc 1 chronicles the sessions for "The White Album". Starting off with a newly recorded short instrumental called "A Beginning" (which sounds an awful lot like "Good Night), you will strikingly different versions of songs such as "Helter Skelter", "Glass Onion", "Cry Baby Cry", "Julia" and "Ob - La - Di, Ob - La - Da" (in a version that is superior to the releaed version). You will also hear early recordings of "Polythene Pam" (later released as part of the medley on "Abbey Road") and "Junk" (later released on Paul McCartney's 1970 solo debut "McCartney"). There is some great unreleased material as well. Paul's medley "Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias" is a cute little throwaway", but John Lennon's eerie "What's The New Mary Jane" is excellent. While I wish the band did what they did on "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" and added their own parts, the song works fine on its own. You will also hear different versions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Hey Jude" and "Not Guilty" (which later wound up on a 1979 George Harrison solo album).

Disc Two chronicles recordings from the "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" sessions. Here, you will find alternate recordings of "Two Of Us", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", "I Got A Feeling", "Octopuss's Garden", "Get Back" (which, in a heavier version, is better than the released version) and "Let It Be". You will also get to hear the master of "The long And Winding Road" without the overblown orchestral arrangement courtesy of Phil Spector. The cover of Buddy Holly's "Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues" is a nice yet somewhat creepy gam, while "Ain't She Sweet" actuall sounds cool for a jam. The a capella version of "Because" is bonechilling, and the closing alternate take of "The End" rocks, and to give the series a sense of closure, they tacked on that loud piano chord at the end the master of "A Day In The Life" to it. While I would have liked to hear alternate takes of the songs from the "Abbey Road" medley put togther, this disc is still great in its own right and is worth owning.

This third volume is an excellent cd for any fan of The Beatles. I really enjoyed the booklet as well. This album screams must have.

Free Music Review: Forget "Unplugged" folks, this is candid.
Hit: 5 Stars

For 40+ years now, many ears of many gerations have become accustomed to hearing the album released historical songs of the Fab Four. Well, 25 years after Paul made headlines as the one who broke up the Beatles, we were all finally given the opportunity to add these fabulous "studio takes" of the greatest music ever recorded to our "Beatle" collection. Now all of us can share in the experience of the pinnacle of music history in the making. Hell, it's even better than any "unplugged" album because it's all candid and not intentionally recorded for release.

It's fantastic to be able to share a little of what went on during the recordings, all the joking and goofiness that went on and even some impromptu. And of course, I speak for all of the 3 anthology albums that every Beatle fan should be a proud owner of.

I wrote the review on this album rather than on 1 or 2 because the song that made the heaviest impact on me is George's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." I was blown away by it when I first heard it on the radio. It had a whole different perspective to it. It was deeply touching, very emotional, giving me goosebumps as I sunk into it unlike the original release. So, now, along with "A Day in a Life", "Across the Universe", and "Elanor Rigby", this version of "While My Guitar", taking nothing away from John and Paul, has become one of my most favorite Beatle songs, if not, thee... most.

Free Music Review: Excellent!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all I would like to say to every casual fan this is not a cd for you. This is not meant to be a album full of hits that sound better than the previous versions. This is more of a look inside to at them making the songs and a way to release versions that are a bit different. Instead of anthology it could have been called rarities because thats pretty much what this is. For die hard beatles fans this is awesome. Happiness is a warm gun has a nice touch to it with john screwing up. while my guitar gently weeps is also really good. its about 120 min worth of music so your deffinately getting your money worth.

Free Music Review: *Don't Pass Me By*!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't know what it is, but the Beatles have a way of making me deliriously happy. Songs like "Hey Jude" or "Two of Us" give me mixed emotions that are quite hard to explain. If you like that euphoric far-out feeling too, and you always sing along to Jude's "na-na-na's"- you'll like this anthology.

Let me just say that I LOVE Beatle banter. I love it! When I hear Paul or John and all of their antics, I feel like I'm there also. Like I'm being let in on a little secret. And anthology serves it up, folks. Giggling, chatter, and the occasional f-bomb. (And Beatle cursing is so much more charming than you'd expect.) If that's not enough Beatle nonsense for you, there's also a rough cut of "Rocky Raccoon" ...Rocky is "sminking of gin." But if the name "Yoko Ono" makes you cringe, skip the take of "Happiness is a Warm Gun"...

If you're a fan of alternate versions and songs that didn't make it onto Beatles albums, you'll love what this anthology gives you: Paul's demo for "Come and Get It" which Badfinger recorded; George's developing "All Things Must Pass", plus the rejected "Teddy Boy"... and the impromptu jam, "Los Paranoias." "Los paranoias...come and enjoy us"? What? Haha, another reason I love Beatle nonsense. And as for alternate versions, we get "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da" with a reggae-vibe and sax. Interesting.

Yup, I could just sit here type at you for another half hour about this collection, but that would be wasting your time and my own. So I'll bring this to a close by saying: this is not an album you listen to in the car, it is not back ground music at a party. This is for Beatles fans who have the time to sit down with their headphones and let John, Paul, George and Ringo entertain them for two hours without interruption. So go ahead and add this anthology to your Amazon shopping cart...you know you want to. Buy it now.
