Free Music Notes for Anthology 3

Free Music Review: More Paul is Dead Clues and More Great Tunes
Hit: 5 Stars

The last of the Anthology series is a fun listen, especially with the fan titled "White Album" material being presented in acoustic settings and earlier, but complete, renditions. And while "What's the New Mary Jane" isn't going to be the great unreleased Beatles song some may have been hoping for, it is enjoyable if you're into Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. There's a lot that is fun here, including the newest "clues" in the great Paul is Dead hoax. The picture of Paul from Rubber Soul has been sliced through the head (top to bottom) and then put back on slightly askew, which of course represents the decapitation in the car accident. There is more, but I'm not going to ruin your fun in finding the others. Fun is the operative word here--with the music and the clues--it's a great wrap-up to an excellent project. A splendid time is definitely guaranteed for all!

Free Music Review: A Must-Have For Big Beatles Fans!
Hit: 4 Stars

"Anthology 3" is perhaps the most important piece to understanding The Beatles process of perfecting a song. This compilation of previously unreleased songs or alternate versions shows songs before they were finished. Unforunately, this sometimes makes versions of songs unlistenable when you've heard the finished version. Still this should not stop you from buying this compilation. Especially if you mean to hear some covers of old rock standards or songs that were dropped from "The Beatles (White Album)". However it may have been beneficial to leave "What's The New Mary Jane" off it.

Some alternate versions of songs may sound as good or better than the official version like "Sexy Sadie". Paul's version of "Come and Get It" sounds superb as does "The Long and Winding Road" "un-Spectorized", although "I Me Mine" may have benefitted from the extending done to it by Spector when it was put on "Let It Be", though I think the opening dialogue and original mix which sounds somewhat clearer and, dare I say it, better, should have been kept. I think The Beatles should have left the intro found here on "Hey Jude" on the official release. In my opinion, Harrison's singing is superior to that on the official release of "Something" and "Piggies", but sadly most of the instruments that were present on the official release are not present on these versions.

The version of "Because" found here with no instruments shows just how well The Beatles could combine their voices and harmonize (except for Ringo). The second version of Glass Onion that appears on the first disc (the mono version) is argueably better than the version released on "The Beatles". Some songs found on the "Anthology" series varies only slightly from the official release and that is no more evident than on the version of "Mother Nature's Son" found here.

The book that comes with "Anthology 3" comes in handy when you're looking for virtually useless facts about The Beatles and the alternate takes' numbers. And while sometimes the music seems almost unbearable to listen to at times when you reach the end of this compilation you'll be able to pick out specific tracks that you'd consider listening to over and over again. And while this review may seem to point out only negatives, you won't be disappointed if you get this (unless you're only a very casual Beatles fan and you normally would only buy compilations of greatest hits or great songs). You should definetly buy this compilation after buying later Beatles albums so that you can hear the evolution of songs like "Rocky Raccoon" and "Come Together" (which is especially interesting).

Free Music Review: They Shoulda Stopped With Anthology Two
Hit: 2 Stars

This is painful to listen to (and not in a good way like say, "Cold Turkey"). Two stars only because it's the "Fab Four".

Free Music Review: "Sminking of gin.."
Hit: 5 Stars

Listening to the anthologies was such fun! Bonuses include "Come and Get It," "Los Paranoias" at the end of "Step Inside Love" and "Rocky Racoon.." (Paul: "The doctor walked in...sminking of gin....Sminking?!") Sometimes you find yourself laughing at them laughing.

Overall, good stuff.

Free Music Review: Studio Out Takes - Buyer Beware
Hit: 2 Stars

If you are looking for a glimpse inside the recording sessions at Apple studios, then this might be a CD worth buying.

If you are looking for a collection of Beatles music, stay far away.

These are studio out takes and VERY rough cuts. The first CD is filled with what seem to be demo versions of songs. Usually a single member and an acoustic guitar without mixing nor accompanying harmony from other band members.

While this is interesting, it has no replayablity, and leaves me yearning for the "finished" songs that are yet to come. Perhaps if the CD had the rough cut followed by the "real" version it would have some merit, but as it stands it seems a cynical ploy to sell studio tapes knowing that the public will buy anything Beatles, even though this denegrates the magic of Beatle Mania, rather than enhances it.

I view this as [money] wasted.
