Free Music Review: Love it till you burn your laser out..and beyond
Hit: 5 Stars

What's not to love about these 4 guys from Liverpool???? Their whole history is like a movie in itself...

I was lucky enough to be a wide eyed 11 year old, when The Beatles made their American debut on the Ed Sullivan show In February 1964. I got to experience the whole Beatlemania madness firsthand. You just cant imagine how much of the media they controlled back in 1965. From 1964 to 1966...they were the buzz word that everybody was talking. For very good reason....they were the best.

Each of their lp's was a progression....as their appearance changed...as did the length of their hair...so did the music. They grew as musicians...am sure George Martin played a very important role in their growth process.

Which brings us to album #5...Help. The Beatles have reached a mature stage in their career where they've gone beyond the "yea yea yea"...and were actually doing some serious song writing.

There's no need to disect each song track here....anybody who is reading this already knows the songs. For those who aren't that familiar....As with all Beatles albums...there is a very good mix of musical styles represented. This would be the last album to see cover material...Act Naturally and Dizzie Miss Lizzie are the last tracks that will be non-Beatle songs on any albums to follow. Yet another major change in their image.

This has always been my favourite album...followed closely by A Hard Days Night. You just wont find better production.. songwriting ..singing and playing anywhere in the universe.

As another reviewer said....The Beatles were the best of the best....this album represents some of their best efforts.

Free Music Review: NOT THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
Hit: 4 Stars

To be called the "Soundtrack" version it sure haS a track listing that is not the film I saw, or the music in the film.
The original soundtrack included several instrumental songs and,,,well,,,,Yesterday is not from the Help album and neither was dizzy Miss Lizzy and several other songs.
As I sit here looking over My ORIGINAL album the track lisking is as follows:
HELP, THE NIGHT BEFORE,ANOTHER HARD DAYS NIGHT (INST), YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY, I NEED YOU, IN THE TYROL (INST), ANOTHER GIRL, FROM ME TO YOU FANTASY, TICKET TO RIDE, THE BITTER END/YOU CAN'T DO THAT, YOU'RE GOING TO LOSE THAT GIRL AND THE INSTRUMENTAL "THE CHASE"

WELL I'VE PLAYED THE TAPE AND WATCHED THE MOVIE.........WHERE ARE ALL THESE SONGS FROM "RUBBER SOUL" AND OTHER DOING ON "HELP THE SOUNDTRACK?

Free Music Review: 2 parts power pop, 1 part marijuana, 1 part Dylan
Hit: 5 Stars

Having been a Beatles fan for 30 years, I have read scores of books and articles and talked to hundreds of other fans (casual or rabid) about their music. One thing that stands out is that both critics and casual fans tend to be dismissive of any Beatles albums before Rubber Soul. If I had a nickel for every time I heard/read someone say something like,"Their early stuff was bubble gum. They didn't get 'good' until Rubber Soul," I'd be retired in Tahiti.

No doubt, Rubber Soul was something of a watershed album. Clearly, it was proof of their tremendous creative expansion and growth. But, throughout their entire recording careers, the Beatles progressed (perhaps taking something of a step backward during the Let it Be period.) Generally speaking, each successive album was most interesting than its predecessor. But, hints of the growth were always seen in the previous albums.

Help! is no different. Having been turned on to marijuana -- by Bob Dylan -- and Dylan's music in late 1964, the Beatles, particularly John and Paul, began thinking of music differently. Help! was the first outward sign that the Beatles wanted to be something more than the "toppermost of the poppermost." They wanted to be artists.

Having to knock out a handful of catchy tunes for their latest movie, John came up with "Help!" which seemed even to him at the time as a rather shallow pop song. He later recognized it was his "cry for help," a precursor to "Mother," "God," and other songs to come out of his primal scream period. Meanwhile, Paul was busy dreaming up one of the most recognized songs in music history, "Yesterday." "You Got To Hide Your Love Away" foreshadows "Girl" and "Norwegian Wood," folk-rock songs about the darker side of love and romance. "I've Just Seen a Face," likewise, hinted at the folk-rock flavors to come on Rubber Soul.

"The Night Before," "I Need You," "Another Girl," and "You're Gonna Lose that Girl," are all pop-rock songs, very much in the style that had made the Beatles the most popular (and best) band in the world. John would later remember "Ticket to Ride" as a very "heavy record," a hint that songs like "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer" were on their way.

As they had with their previous albums, the Beatles added some of the songs they liked growing up, "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" and "Act Naturally." Help! would be the last album to feature more than one rock or country standard as filler.

All in all, Help! is under-appreciated and under-recognized. While it didn't reach the creative heights of the next several albums, top to bottom, it was years beyond what many of the Beatles' contemporaries were putting out at the time. Standing on its own, Help! is an essential work. Buy it. Now!
