Hit: 5 Stars

this is it, the album that really, really started to shine in the things that The Beatles were really capable of, no more of that "boy/girl" mush found in the first four, also, no more filling half the album with covers, no my friends, IMO, Help! is really the album that first introduced people to the brilliance that would edventaully result in the finest piece of music, pop or otherwise, ever written, Abbey Road.

So, the opening number, this is effective both as a biographical Lennon tale and as the mad start of a Bond spoof, its brilliant insanity.

next we move to "The Night Before" which is another fine number, although somewhat outshined by later songs in the album
"You've got to Hide your Love Away" is my personal favorite track on the album, it captures the folky essance of Dillan while sounding like a Lennon/McCartney song all the same
the next three tracks are somewhat standard JL/PM fare, boy girl ballads, which can kind of wear on you a ltitle, so lets skip to 7: Ticket to Ride, if your reading this, odds are you've heard this masterwork countless times, well here it is agian, great as ever. Onto "Act Naturally" this is a cover I can actually stand, its one of Ringo's better vocals for the group, and ranks up there with "Twist and Shout" as some of their best covers
the next three are agian standard pop LM fare, if you like early Beatles, great, if you want to get to pure brillance, skip to the last three songs.
"I've just seen a face" in my opinion, captures the excitment of love better then almost any song, and yes, I'm counting Something, Yesterday, well, you don't need me to tell you its pure gold, "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" harkens back to Twist and Shout as John agian nearly destroys his vocal chords belting this one, and its a great capper.

this is the album that began the middle period for the beatles, not quite to the genius of Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road, but escaped from the typical feel of the first four.

Free Music Review: almost perfect
Hit: 4 Stars

I find this album a masterpiece of its time. It is the last pop album by the beatles, before they developed into a talent to be reckoned with. But the songs on here are for the most part really strong. My faves are 'yesterday' (surprise) and 'i've just seen a face' by Macca. Lennon is still the superior songwriter at this stage, though things were to change soon. His songs are all excellent.
Harrison is lagging behind the other two, but his two songs are enjoyable ditties.
Criticism from me on the two covers. I never really liked 'act naturally' and I can't stand 'dizzie miss lizzie'. I think these two tracks should have been replaced by three others: 'Yes it is', 'I'm Down' (this would have been an excellent album closer.) and why the excellent 'That means a lot' could not be included is a mystery. This epic Macca tune has a soaring melody and nice harmonies which would have become a standout track.
Still, a worthwhile album.

Free Music Review: Musical Crossroads
Hit: 4 Stars

'Help' recorded in 1965, represented the beginning of the musical transition from the Beatlemania period to the more sophisticated areas of songwriting that the Beatles were to begin exploring on their next album, Rubber Soul also recorded in 1965.

Except on the final track, the Beatles finally dispensed with the 'Merseybeat' sound that featured on all their past albums to a greater or lesser extent. There is a more mature approach with some of these songs and arrangements. 'Help' the excellent title track has unusual chord changes at the start, before John launches into the main verse. This is another of his introspective songs, about insecurity. That Dylan influenced the Lennon song 'You've got to hide your love away' is a fallacy. The Beatles were already featuring folk-like material from the off. Eg, 'Love me do', the Beatles first single recorded in 1962 was a self-penned acoustic blues number, featuring Lennon on harmonica, before Dylan had barely released his first album. This song deals with paranoia to a degree, as well as insecurity, eg...
'Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say...'
This was Lennon talking, hardly Dylan.
The short simple flute solo tacked on at the end is a nice little touch, and was completely novel at the time. To me this has to be the stand-out track.

Yet another first was the ever popular 'Yesterday', where the Beatles, or rather Paul McCartney recorded the song with a chamber music ensemble. This arrangement had never been done by any pop group before. It became one of the most famous of all Beatle songs, of course. It is precisely these unusual touches or arrangements to their songs that made the Beatles stand out against any other group of their time, apart from the originality of much of their material. The other well known track 'Ticket to ride' was a classic single hit released before the album, and has a powerful guitar laden sound behind it.

The remaining tracks range from good to ok. The best of the rest are, 'I've just seen a face' which is an acoustic number, played fast, very much in a folk-music vein. 'Another girl' has a bluesey feel, and has some nice guitar fills by George. 'You're going to lose that girl' is another strong Lennon song with a hook. In fact there is not really one bad song on here, unlike Rubber Soul, which gives Help a more consistent feel to it. However there is hardly one song on Help that matches the very best songs on RS either, 'YGTHYLA' and Help' being two possible exceptions. My only quibble with Help is that they finished the album with 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy', the last time the Beatles were to do a cover version of a song. It would have been that much better if they had chosen the B side of the 'Help single, 'I'm down' which is an all-out rocker by Lennon/McCartney, and far superior to the closing track they used instead.

Free Music Review: Classic
Hit: 4 Stars

Help, Yesterday, Ticket to ride all topped the charts. The reason this is my fifth favirote album and 4 stars is Yes it is which is a wonderful Lennon Ballad would have been great to close the album instead of Dizzy miss lizzy. GodBless

Free Music Review: Another Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Help is of course the soundtrack from their second movie. I contains some of their finest song from the era where they still played Rock and Roll.
Help the title track was written in about a half hour in order to beat a deadline. Help to this day is one of John Lennons finest songs.
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away has an obvious Bob Dylan influence to it. It sounds exactly like something Dylan would have recorded..
Act Naturally is a Buck Owens cover that Ringo does. Yesterday, the most recorded song in music history also appears on this CD.
It has been recorded at least 250 times at last count.
McCartney talks about how he dreamed the song and went to the session the next day and asked John what it sounded like.
John could not tell him. so after a few days or weeks of writing lyrics, it was finally completed. Possibly the greatest Beatle song ever recorded. This CD is a must for any Beatles collection.
