Free Music Notes for Help! [UK]Free Music Review: This was Yesterday, but it's Still Rocking Hit: 5 StarsThe Beatles 5th album "Help!" was also the music to their second film "Help". This was the last album released before the transition period under "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver". musically "Help!" is a mix of Beatlemania and Folk Rock that John had discovered about a year prior to this. Still there are a few examples of what was coming later in 1965. Either way this is a exellent album, and one of the best "older" Beatles albums.
It starts with the catchy Beatlesmania "Help" that is boty simple to sing a long to and meliodic. It's one of these songs that imediatly starts with the hook. It was a trans-atlantic megahit. "The Night Before" is underrated, but great with it's easy melancholy melody, electric piano and blues guitar. "You Got to Hide your Love" is a slow ballad like song, it proves the folk infleunce Beatles had at the time. Accounstic guitar is used here and also Tambourines. "I Need You" is one of my favorites here, even if it's less famous it's a special song with it's meliodic sound and it's pedal guitar. It got a very nice riff. It's also a Harrison song, quite un-ordinary at the time.
"Another Girl" is a folkish song with blues guitar. A very nice riff here too. It is a Paul dominated song, hence even the lead guitar. "You gonna lose that Girl" is a nice meliodic midtempo song with the boys singing in voices. It's sung by Lennon and it's one of those albums songs that could have been a hit. "Ticket to Ride" is a highlight here, and big hit aswell. It got the folk rock feeling all over it, the riff from Harrison sounds abit of the Byrds, although the Beatles had already released an album of folk songs the year prior to them. Musically it was the best song of this album and proved how fast the band was evolving. "Act Naturally" was the only song sung by Ringo here, it's 1 of 2 covers here and sound like pure country.
"It's only Love" is a decent slow paced Lennon song, it's barely 2 minutes but still alright. "You Like Me Too Much" was the second Harrison song, it's not one of his better but he showed he was a good songwriter too. The song is also folkish. "Tell Me What You see" is also less well known, a mid tempo song. "I've just seen a Face" is quite typical for Paul, it got a accoustic guitar and a fast verse. "Yesterday" is one of the highlight, a beautiful ballad about nostalgia when things used to be better and life looked much brighter. It's also lead by a accoustic guitar and string quarter. It's one of the most covered Beatles songs of all time. "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" is the second cover and should perhaps been on their previous album that had was full of rock n roll covers.
Overall, it's a fantastic album that also was ahead of it's time when it came out and showed the ever evolving Liverpool band that this time showed alot of the contemporary folk rock movemnet in the mid 60's. "Help" was the last album before the transition albums, but it shows hints already of what was coming. A fantastic album, full of good songs, if you prefer the newer stuff 65-70, just give this album some time and you'll love it aswell. Essential work.
Free Music Review: Beatles - 'Help' (Capitol) Hit: 5 StarsReview no.205.Don't believe I actually ever realized before just how MUCH material the Beatles did end up putting out.'Help' looks to be their fifth actual album,a 1965 release.I seem to barely remember the movie,as I should see it again sometime.Great soundtrack.Tunes here I thoroughly enjoyed hearing again SO much,I ended up playing this disc repeatedly.Cuts I couldn't get enough of were "The Night Before"(I've been meaning to get this song for ages),"Another Girl"(recently heard Alice Cooper play this track on his nightly 'deep album cut' feature, very nice),"You're Going To Lose That Girl","Ticket To Ride","Yesterday" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy".Great sound, highly recommended reissue.A must-have.
Free Music Review: The turning point.....better than Hard Day's Night Hit: 5 StarsThis has better songs. It was the beginning of their mature stages.
Free Music Review: HELP yorself to a treat Hit: 4 StarsWith this album you can hide your love away, get help, lose that girl, think about the problems you had yesterday or was it the night before? Whatever you do with this album you'll love it and enjoy youself from track 1 through to track 14.
Free Music Review: Solid Early Beatles Hit: 4 StarsThis is second to only With the Beatles as my favorite of the group's pre-Rubber Soul albums. I'll admit it was a tentative time for the group, but they made unforgettable music during that period. Most of this album is catchy, hook-filled rock: the title track; The Night Before; You're Gonna Lose That Girl (with Ringo turning in some of his best drums in history); Ticket to Ride; You Like Me Too Much; Tell Me What You See (the closest thing to an underrated Beatles song I can imagine) and the acoustic I've Just Seen a Face are the highlights here. There are also a couple ballads, the strongest being John's Dylan-esque You've Got to Hide Your Love Away. On the other hand, George's I Need You is miserable, and the much-hyped Yesterday is, in my mind, bathetic lounge music and easily the most overrated Beatles song in history. That's just me, though. There are a few other duds (Another Girl, Ringo's awful C&W showcase Act Naturally), but this album is much better than I had given it credit for on my previous review, which desperately needed editing.
