Free Music Notes for Let It BeFree Music Review: Half baked Hit: 3 StarsThe idea behind "Let it be" was to make an album & movie of The Beatles creating and recording an album with little or no overdubs and then performing it live somewhere. Not a bad idea, but somewhere along the line it never really came to fruition. Instead we are left with a disjointed and somewhat drab collection of songs. Some of tunes are good. While others should have been either reworked, discarded or b-sides. Phil Spector producing is down right terrible too. I know he didn't have much to work with.
Free Music Review: Beatles weakest Hit: 3 StarsWhat do I think of The Beatles? I was a big fan in my teenage years. These days I'm a casual fan- I hardly ever actively listen to them but if I hear a song of theirs around I'd probably listen to it.
But even in my days as a fan I knew that this album wasn't all that great. There a few gems for sure, Let It Be is a gorgeous song, even more poignant when you learn it's about Pauls late mother. Across The Universe is John at his introspective best. The Long And Winding Road, well it could have been great but the syrupy arrangement spoils it somewhat. Get Back is decent enough rocker. The rest of the songs range from not bad to pretty weak. The Beatles were adequate enough live but never really great. But that was never the point. Their point was great songwriting, and there's not a huge amount of that in Let It Be. A lot of the songs, like Dig A Pony for example don't really gel much beyond "okay" status and I can't help but think that given more time it could have been sculpted into something mcuh better.
I don't believe that The Beatles are the most overrated band of all time (that goes to Led Zeppelin) but at the same time many people do have a tendency to overlook their flaws because they have such a legendary status. Even many online rock album review sites will give this album either 5 stars or an A rating depending on th reviewer. I personally would give this album maye a C+ to B- rating. In my view it's The Beatles weakest, even more than their less artistically regarded early stuff. And I don't believe the Beatles weakest is better than other bands best either. This album sounds just plain unfinished. So I can't really recommend this album as a priority purchase if you're new to The Beatles catalog. However despite all that, I do like this album.
Free Music Review: Just Think If This Album Was Not Released Hit: 4 StarsA very nice album, but knowing what they were going through during it, I find myself putting it alongside "Double Fantasy" in that it hurts my heart to listen to it sometimes. Kind of like a death in the family, and the fact that most of the cover is black is not lost on me.
However, if the Beatles had decided NOT to release "Let It Be", just think of what Paul McCartney's first solo album could have sounded like!! You'd have "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Every Night", "Teddy Boy", along with "Let It Be", "Get Back", "The Long and Winding Road", "Two Of Us", "I've Got a Feeling"....geez....what a first solo album!!
Free Music Review: Mostly a bunch of demos Hit: 3 StarsIt is difficult to criticise this album, as it was never really produced the way the Beatles wanted it. Moreover, many of the songs don't have the live feel the Beatles wanted (even without the overdubs) they just sound unfinished. 'The long and winding road' is a gorgeous Beatles song, but a proper definitive version was never released. Take the version without the strings, a badly recorded bass part, it just is not complete. Same for 'I me mine' an incomplete song, edited together, so it appears longer. They never got 'Across the universe' right either, although it is a lovely song. 'I dig a pony' sounds like a demo of a song pattern, undeveloped and merely repeated.
Judged as a bunch of demos, Lennon's material is lacking. 'I dig a pony' is his only new song to the record, the other contributions being a small part of 'I've got a feeling' and older songs regurgitated for this project. Paul shines with five new recordings and they clearly are the highlight of the record, although some are incomplete.
Free Music Review: Just revisiting my old music. Hit: 5 StarsI purchased this to replace my scratched up record I purchased back when I was 14-quite a while ago. Enjoying the music and great memories; creating new ones with my kids!
