Free Music Notes for Live at the BBC

Free Music Review: A SENSATIONAL CD
Hit: 5 Stars

If you don't have this cd, get it. This is one of the finest collections of songs that I have ever heard. It is hard to believe that these songs were performed live for radio. Many of the songs are recording studio quality. The song 'I'll Be On My Way' was worth the price of the entire cd.

Free Music Review: Roots of a revolution
Hit: 5 Stars

Prior to its official release, the recordings on this CD had been (maybe after Dylans "Basement Tapes")the most sought after bootlegs in existance. And like Dylans "Basement Tapes",they are indespensable to any collector of their music because both collections demonstrate not only the influences of these artists, but also how well they covered the music they loved, ( the Beatles & Dylan are the only 2 musicall phenomenas I can think of who could actually IMPROVE on the originall recordings they covered).
The CD shows, once it has been added to your collection of Beatle albums, how this greatest of all rock bands took what had come before they started making their own records, mastered it: & then forged it into the sound that would take over the world. As you listen to it, notice how songs like "soldier of love" is not just a cover of that song,(done originally by R& B singer Arthur Alexander, an american singer who they covered a number of times, eg. "Anna")but it has been transformed into a "Beatles" song- if you had been told it was one of their own compositions it would be easy to believe.
You must understand, the Beatles didnt just come along in 1964 & create a new sound,(although they did do that also)They were as much a part of the first wave of rock & roll as someone like Little Richard, though their influence didnt extend far past Liverpool & Hamburgh at that time.
Rock critic Greil Marcus:"Consider the Beatles history. In 1955, John & Paul were playing something approximating rock & roll before they had ever heard of Elvis Presley (the same cannot be said of Buddy Holly);they wrote their 1st hit, "Love me do", before they heard "That'll Be The Day".In other words, when they signed with EMI they were not merly in touch with their roots; in a significant & probably unique sense, they WERE their roots. They were not only a PRODUCT of the pre-Beatle era of Rock, they were a VERSION of it.Accompanying the shock of novility so many experienced on 1st exposer to the Beatles in '64 was a shock of RECOGNITION, which bespoke the Beatles' connection to the whole history of rock n roll up to that time: the Beatles had absored that history because-year by year, playing & listening & writing, in Liverpool & Hamburg- they had, albeit invisibly, MADE IT."
This CD is no weak effort to cash in on Beatle songs that had not priviously been made available, it should have been made available years ago. Also, if you dont even care about the evelution of rock n roll but you just like Beatles hits, on the 2nd disc there are recordings going up to 1965 of them doing many of their hits such as the great "Ticket to ride".etc. Imagine, A group as big as the Beatles going into a radio station to play music, I dont think they were even getting paid.
For me, one of the most remarkable things about them was, all the hype surronding them, all the fame they got before we even knew much about them except "I want to hold your hand", all the BEATLEMANIA of 1964,before even the movie "Hard days night" They lived up to it!(the fame). It just seemed obvious on 1st hearing them that they were the ones!
We will never see their likes again.

Free Music Review: Fab!
Hit: 5 Stars

I had delayed buying this cd because of some of the more negative reviews. BOY - did I waste time! Guess you just can make some people happy. These recording were made for BBC radio shows in the early to mid 60's. There were no studio magic tricks to be performed. Of course some of the quality isn't like a regular studio recording - what do you expect? The Beatles intentionally performed songs that they were not releasing to give the listeners something to look forward to - why tune in to a radio show to hear a song you can play on your turntable any time you want? This is as close as most of us will ever get to knowing what it was like to see a live performance by the Beatles. If you are a Beatles fan (and real Beatles fans do not only like the phsycodelic stuff - they may prefer it - but they appreciate all aspects of the band) then you have to own this. The interview clips are hysterical (especially when John yells in the background "Tell 'em about my book!"). The songs are wonderful - very energetic and raw. Really makes you wish you could have caught them at the Cavern! As for "I'll Be On My Way" - the only Lennon/McCartney song on the album that they never released, I don't see why a June/moon rhyme is a bad thing - I love that song! Paul's versions of "That's All Right" and "Lucille" are really great.

Free Music Review: Beatles Live, Without the Crowd Noise
Hit: 4 Stars

This two disc set, first released in 1994, was the first substantial officially released project, backed by the folks at Apple, that contained previously unreleased performances from the Beatles since "The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl" in 1977 (which is still out of print). Although many bootleggers out there already had much of this stuff, it was a gift to those who did not have the BBC bootlegs or simply could not afford them. And here they were, some fifty songs taken from those weekend radio stations, all in one place, all at a semi-affordable, 2CD set price. (Even though the set omits "Lend Me Your Comb," it did show up on "The Beatles Anthology 1" in 1995). Now, the music. It is really a blast to hear the Beatles stomp through many of their favorite rock n' roll songs. Covers of "Young Blood," "Lucille," "Sweet Little Sixteen," "The Hippy Hippy Shake" and "Ooh! My Soul" are fiery and exhuberant, and rock with as much gusto as the early Rolling Stones records. The highlight has got to be "Some Other Guy," which is often featured in documentary footage of the Beatles playing at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. There is only one original, previously unreleased Beatles composition here, "I'll Be On My Way." The song is easily one of the weaker Lennon/McCartney compositions (it even has a moon/june rhyme). In general, the performances of their originals do not have the verve of their officially released versions of these songs (notable exceptions being "I'm a Loser," and their covers of "Baby It's You" and "Matchbox"). For instance, on "A Hard Day's Night," the tricky piano solo, played by George Martin on the record, is inserted into the middle of the live performance here because Harrison had not yet figured out how to play that part. Things like this simultaneously add and detract charm from this 2CD set. While the live versions of many early Beatles favorites offer no improvement over the available versions, the exhuberance uncovered in the cover versions (as well as their humor in-between performances) make this set worth owning, even for the Beatle amateur. When I first purchased this in 1994, it single-handedly made me interested in early rock n' roll, which I had previously (and stubbornly) dismissed as uninteresting.

Free Music Review: talent always beats out the hype
Hit: 5 Stars

This collection gives any Beatle fan a better look at how much more the group did before their american popularity. The media always ruins the public's view by forcing us to listen to a certain selection of music. This 2CD will show any music lover the early raw talent of the best band in history.
