Free Music Notes for Love (CD + Audio DVD)Free Music Review: Best absorbed all at once Hit: 5 Stars
I have the deluxe DVD-A version since the day it was released. And, unless you have a DVD-Audio player, like a few reviewers state, there is no difference. So, yes, you would be wasting your money on the "deluxe" version. Aaahhhh... but if you are able to listen in 5.1 channel (actually 4.1 channel, there is no center channel) on a high quality sound system with real speakers you'll be amazed. The other conclusion I've come to, is the CD needs to be listened to completely through, beginning to end. Something of a lost art in these days of I-Pods and CD players. Remember the days of the long play album and sitting and listening to an album side all the way through. The album is best absorbed with a complete listen. And, it is amazing. The alternative is to listen through a pair of high-quality headphones. Real headphones. Not $15 I-Pod ear buds.
One other point I'd lke to make. Listening to this reminds us of how technically proficient the Beatles were. How gifted they actually were. To think that some of these recordings are almost forty years old. And, if you listen closely, you realize how much Ringo actually did bring to the songs. He was an excellent drummer and made his parts fit in perfectly.
If you are expecting hit singles and individual tunes to download to your I-Pod, this is not the CD for you. If you want a complete musical experience of an hour and twenty minutes, you won't be disappointed. Especially if you have the equipment to experience it the way it was intended. And, if you are old enough to remember the release of a new Beatles album stacked up on the counter of your local record shop, you may be in for some goosebumps moments.
And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make....
Free Music Review: Great Concept and the Greatest Sound Quality Ever for Beatles Recordings Hit: 5 Stars
Regarding the concept: As a Beatles completist and purist, I was a bit hesitant about this concept but after listening I was blown away like many other reviewers. The George Martin string arrangement on While My Guitar Gently Weeps gives a wonderful new life to the song. It's also great to hear this earlier George vocal take with a different verse. "I look from the wings at the play you are staging - while my guitar gently weeps. As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging - still my guitar gently weeps."
Regarding the mash-up: For those potential buyers fearing a giant mixed-up hodge podge of unrecognizable songs, this is not the case. All the mixes are well done and creative. Also, some songs are more "mixed" than others. Several songs sound about 80 percent unchanged other than the lead-in and lead-out. There is one notable difference though - greatly improved sound resolution...
Regarding the sound: The 5.1 is very impressive and should be applied to the entire catalog. I recalibrated my speaker balance to fully enjoy the DVD. Here is the amazing thing though: the regular CD audio is more crisp and clear than ever. I've listened to all these songs on CD in my car before - but today I heard clearer more dynamic sounds than I have ever heard! I'm glad to know the potential is there to draw out this level of fidelity from all the songs. Giles Martin states in the liner notes that expected the EMI tapes to have hisses and crackles but the engineers recorded the Beatles so well the tapes sounded as if they were "frozen in time... as if it they were recorded yesterday."
Beatles fans who apprehensive about "tampering" - have no fear! Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream!
Free Music Review: OUT OF THIS WORLD Hit: 5 Stars
This new remixes disc is probably the first great 21st century stoner album. My friend and I made it a big production Monday night. We put on the album in the dark and lay there. Within the first thirty seconds of "Because" I was in tears. "Because the world is round" had morphed into the airiest chant. Leave it to the Beatles and their surviving team to come up with a remixes album that is spacey and extremely psychedelic. This was a fantastic idea and I couldn't think of anyone better to have done it than Martin and his son. This album is yet another reason why the Beatles are the best and coolest band ever.
There are so many gorgeous moments. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was amazing. Many, many highlights that I'll revisit. All the segues were brilliantly done by the Martins. One thing I wonder about the mixing...it seems that when "I Want to Hold Your Hand" comes on and you hear the Hollywood Bowl live in the back...I feel like they almost made the shrieking too loud on purpose to put you in the middle of Beatlemania. Is it me or does that part seem over the top with how loud it is in comparison to the rest of the album's mix? It'd be pretty clever I'd say! "Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows" is absolutely unreal. There are so many great moments. The new intro to "Lucy In the Sky" is so trippy! "Octopus's Garden" is fantastic. So many moments.
I haven't heard the stereo version yet, but the 5.1 version is definitely worth it. There is so much space and the sound is so perfect. It was almost Beatles overload to hear them so clear and defined and with so much space flowing throughout the tracks.
This is a great day for a Beatles fan.
Free Music Review: It's Impossible Not To Fall In Love With "Love". Hit: 5 Stars
It seemed like a risky move. George Martin, the legendary Beatles producer, and his son Giles, teamed together to create a compilation of newly remixed Fab Four classics as well as some lesser known gems from their catalogue, and remix, remaster and combine these classics to make a brand new collection of The Beatles like you've never heard them before.
It pays off flawlessly. "Love" is a masterpiece, and possibly the best album of the year. "Love" is truly an experience to listen to: it's a sirring, often scary, often fun and always magnificent album. Kicking off with the bird sound effects of "Across The Universe" mixed in with the chilling a capella tune "Because", we thewn journey through snippets of "Hard Day's Night" and "The End" before seguing into a fired up "Get Back" that is better than the original.
The rest of the album is a sonic marvel. Did you ever think George Harrison's gorgeous ballad "Something" would weave so seamlessly into his haunting "Blue Jay Way"? Probably not, but man does it work. Other standouts include the medley of "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite / I Want You (She's So Heavy) / Helter Skleter", the reworked "Strawberry Fields Forever", and the stunning solo George performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" complete with a haunting string quartet.
"Love" is a masterpiece. It's not only great for diehard fans, but it's also perfect for introducing The Beatles' music to a whole new generation of fans. I hae not watched the dvd, but I'm sure it's great. Still, the music is the main attraction here, and it's magical, to say the least.
Free Music Review: Revelations, Beatles 2.0, Genius at Work Hit: 5 Stars
Credits: George Harrison and Guy Laliberte for the concept, Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia for sanctioning the production and especially the 5th Beatle genius of Sir George Martin and is son for brining a fresh interpretation to the most treasured music of the past 50 years. The task of selecting what to include in this amazingly inventive production would have been daunting to anyone other than Sir George. His intimacy with every detail of the recording sessions and production provides us with a gift none of us ever could have expected. We should all give thanks that he was able to stay with us long enough to produce such a masterpiece. Avid Beatles fans have had these songs floating around in their minds as lifelong soundtracks for decades sometimes out of sequence and sometimes just snippets kicked off in our heads by a word, a look or a feeling. "Love" is alarming at times because your instinctual expectations are turned upside down by new treatments and arrangements and it all works wondrously. We get a nice through-the-looking-glass view into the world of Beatles and their producer. If this is how George Martin conceives such a mixture who would be foolish enough to argue? My only request of Sir George and his son Giles is that they provide and extensive interview relating how they tackled what to include, how they selected the numerous snippets involved and how they sequenced the finished product. John Lennon used to ask his mates "Where are we going boys?" And the response was "To the toppermost of the poppermost". They made it all right and they remain the only occupants of that lofty realm.
