Free Music Notes for LoveFree Music Review: Brilliant!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Yes these are not the original recordings. Nor are there any new songs here. If you are a "purist" (whatever that entails) then don't buy this. I myself am a "purist" (again___) and have been for the past 32 years of my life. I grew up listening to the Beatles, my first song I remember is Blue Jay Way. In no way could you improve on the originals, I think we would all agree on that. The Beatles simply are the the Beatles, yet this collection brought together for the musical "Love" is pretty darn good. Listen to the transitions between songs, the "Taxman" guitar solo dropped into Drive My Car (pretty cool), or my favorite "Within You Without You" / "Tomorrow Never Knows" mash-up (captures that whole pyschedelic groove perfectly). The album is almost dizzying the way the sounds crash and blend into each other. It's awesome. Do these improve on the originals? No. Nothing could, but they give a pretty cool, and different interpretation into these classic gems.
I think more than anything (in direct oppposition to the "Martin is a hack" below) this shows how big a part Martin played in the studio with the Beatles. Anyone even remotely familiar with the Beatles will recognize Martin's importance to group. These songs in their original state outshine anything currently in radio rotation (ok maybe not Octopus's Garden!!!), so this collection should not be someone's introduction to the Beatles, buy the originals (Revolver, Rubber Soul, and the White Album). But for those of us who can quote lyrics verbatim, link A-side singles with their prospective B-sides, etc., buy this album. For me it brought back memories of hearing the originals the first time around. Brilliant!!!
Free Music Review: Creative Genius behind the Beatles does it again...Supurb! Hit: 5 Stars
As distribution continues of this album I expect many reviews to pour in. For the pseudo-experts who feel the need to trash this project I can only say they lack the understanding of the relationship between Sir George and the band and are perhaps clueless of the creative process itself. The segment of our population that cannot have a positive thought seems to be growing every year. This is not a good thing. Much of the music in today's world is over-processed crap that has to pass a marketing committee to see what will sell before it's published. Sir George acknowledged this fact recently by saying much of the Beatles experimental catalogue would not have passed the committees of today's record companies.
This project is wonderfully and thoughtfully crafted. I think John and George, as Paul and Ringo had already done, would give this an enthusiastic endorsement. I would love to have seen the boys perform this same mix live with today's staging and sound technologies. It would have been a concert for the ages.
So to the nay-saying pickle suckers I can only advise that you kick your shoes off, crank it up on a high-end system and realise that Sir George Martin of all people had the right to do this project. Everyone has the right to opine, but the meanness with which some are doing it is troubling indeed.
Like the producer said himself, this album is "not of greatest hits but of greatest sounds". The Beatles together with Sir George recorded some of the most incredible sounds ever produced and they continue to resonate in the hearts and souls of millions even after forty years.
Buy this record and enjoy!
Free Music Review: Masterpiece! Hit: 5 Stars
I got the Beatles "LOVE" album today.. Amazing! I am wrapping up my first spin, but I'm quite blown away. It sounds 10 times better then any other Beatles CD. These mixes are extremely creative. I'm just grining the entire time, loving every second, trying to anticipate what will happen next, and when it does, almost laughing at how cool it is! Picking out the songs that are sprinkled in amoung the 26 tracks is fun too. There's supposedly 130 of them.
Some of the best parts are the build up between "Because" and "Get Back." Play it LOUD! "I Am the Walrus" has never sounded better and more alive. It's almost like this stuff was recorded this year. The "Drive My Car" medley is wonderful. "Mr. Kite/I Want You" is nuts!! "Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows" has to be the highlight. Totally cool! "Here Comes The Sun" is something else too.. with the backing being tabla from "Within You Without You." The vocals on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "A Day In The Life" are so crystal clear, it's amazing. "Octopus's Garden" is also pretty clever in its edits.
Also, can't say I was excited to buy "Hey Jude" again, but this remix is great.. Sounds great and has a true breakdown at the end that I find quite gutsy for such a well known song. I can't recommend this enough! It is very good and quite a gem. I give it the highest possible rating. I feel bad for all those that can't allow themselves to enjoy this, though it will be really hard playing the old CD's now as to how bad they've always sounded.. but those are rumored to be remastered next year. For now, all we have is LOVE.. and I LOVE it!
Free Music Review: the single best Beatles compilation ever. Period. Hit: 5 Stars
That's right...I'm giving this CD 5 stars not for its innovation in "mashing up" the tracks from several Beatles songs on most or all of the tracks. Instead, I'm rating this 5 stars because it's the best single disc of Beatles songs. The Beatles never had a definitive "greatest hits" CD---until now. Sure, there are popular multidisc sets like the Beatles Anthology or the "red" and "blue" albums (4 discs). The only popular single-disc hits compilation thus far, however, has been Beatles 1s. Sure, it had all the #1 Hits on it, but it was almost creepy how unrepresentative that album was of John Lennon and the Beatles sound in general. It was very Paul-heavy. The "Love" album doesn't turn Beatles songs inside out. The basic verses and choruses of the main songs are pretty much all there. Songs like "Something" and "Eleanor Rigby" are mostly unchanged from the original versions. We get the best of their early hits, the best of their experimental years, and everything in between. Mostly, the producers have chopped up the beginnings and the ends of the songs to make seamless transitions from song to song. It has the advantage of being able to throw in snippets from maybe 15 extra songs that wouldn't make it to a 1-CD "best of," but are undoubtedly fan favorites. John's weirdness ("I Am the Walrus" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") are represented here in a way that Beatles #1 never did. This is the ONLY single-CD on the market where a Beatles novice could listen to the one disc and truly walk away with an understanding of what the Beatles sounded like and why they're the best band in rock history.
Free Music Review: LOVE is a trip! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm listening to "LOVE" for the first time right now, and I am digging it!
I know that some people might not like that The Beatles' music was manipulated, altered, etc. But, to anyone who is hesitating buying this CD for this very reason, think again! This is an incredible achievement on the part of George and Giles Martin. I am as hard-core a Beatles fan as you will find (short of dressing up in a collarless jacket every year and attending Beatlefests in every U.S. city on a yearly basis). I am the first to object when I hear Beatles music being misrepresented (can you say "TV commercials"?), but this is far from a mis-use of their music. This is simply a new way to appreciate The Beatles monumental musical legacy.
The way elements from different songs are combined to create such landscapes of sound is truly breath-taking. For life-long Beatles fans like me who have always strained to hear everything in the mixes of every Beatles song, you'll appreciate "LOVE" that much more. Bits that you'd never really been aware of before, because they were were hiding somewhere in the original mix, are brought to the front. By placing elements from different songs into the framework of another song, the sounds are audible in a whole new clarity!
None of the "LOVE" tracks can ever "replace" the original tracks, but that was never the intent. It's a "soundtrack" to a Cirque du Soleil show, and perhaps now the greatest soundtrack ever released.
I am seeing the show in Vegas in about a month. My anticipation of seeing the show has just jumped about a million points!
