Free Music Notes for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Remastered)Free Music Review: Remastering makes for a better sound, but how much better? Hit: 5 Stars
I'm giving this record five stars because what else could you give Sgt. Peppers? It's one of the most amazing achievements in pop/rock music. But we all know that, right? What I wanted to comment on is the remastering. I sat down and went back and forth between the older and remastered versions of Peppers and some things immediately jumped out at me. Paul's bass is much crisper and more present. And since his bass playing is usually very interesting (I mean that in a good way - he doesn't play the ordinary lines one would expect), that's a real plus. Vocals are also more crisp and present. But I do think that these differences are not the sort of thing you'd notice on listening to the album in a casual way. So that raises the question for me - one I'm still dealing with - as to whether it's really worth it to replace my entire Beatles collection with the new remastered cds. I'm still not sure since, as a huge Beatles fan I want only the best sound I can get from these guys, but as a consumer who doesn't want to spend money without really getting something I will really value for it, I'm not sure whether these remastered discs are better enough to warrant the extra expense. Sorry to be so inconclusive, but I write this just because I imagine a lot of Beatles fans are wrestling with the same question. As of now, I've resolved to get one new remastered disc each month and see if I stay motivated to keep buying more. So, we'll see.
Free Music Review: Historically Significant, a Studio Tour De Force, But Ultimately Overrated Hit: 5 Stars
At the time of its release, this album absolutely blew its listeners away. From the inventive cover to the incredible production values never before heard on a rock album, this album represented a complete left turn from all that came before. It was called a 'concept' album, but it really isn't. The songs seem to run together as a meaningful whole, but they have nothing to do w/ each other and lyrically there really isn't any message (apart from L ucy in the S ky with D iamonds). Pet Sounds, which preceded Pepper and motivated its creation, was truly a concept item and stands alone as the first and still the greatest of all concept albums.
Any review of art is mostly opinion. There are some songs that I like a lot: Sgt. Pepper, Sgt. Pepper (reprise), Lucy, She's Leaving Home. Some songs that are ok: Mr. Kite, Lovely Rita, With a Little Help from My Friends. Some songs that are 'eh, whatever': Getting Better, Fixing a Hole, Within You/Without You, Good Morning, When I'm 64.
There's one song that is truly extraordinary and IMO, the greatest song the Beatles ever recorded: A Day in the Life. If the album had 26 minutes of silence and just this one song at the very end, it would still be a good album. Sgt. Pepper, a very good album? No doubt about it. The Beatles best? Nah: See Revolver, Rubber Soul or Abbey Road....
Free Music Review: Although not drastic, still a sonic improvement Hit: 5 Stars
I have so far purchased several of the remastered discs, this one included. I have been a huge fan since I can remember, buying the LP's and then the '87 CD's back when they were first made available. I am very familiar with the music and the different mixes available. I have read reviews both positive and negative regarding these remasters and all I can say is that there is an improvement in the overall sound on these recordings. They are not gonna bring forth never-before heard sounds, but the sound is 'livelier' than before, especially on all the vocals and acoustic instruments.
One thing that comes to mind is the whole remix debate. While I understand all fans were not going to be content with the original stereo mixes, it's the mono mixes everybody refers to when talking about the definitive mixes because The Beatles were actually present for those. If that's the case, why weren't the stereos remixed and the mono left alone? I guess they had the 'purists' in mind for these releases. For now, we'll have to be happy with these releases. If you're a casual fan and already have the original CD's, save your money. For the Beatle fan who is going to buy everything anyway, enjoy - they are better!
Free Music Review: 1 million Stars is what this album deserves Hit: 5 Stars
As a kid I never liked the Beatles, but I had never listen to them. As I got older I still didn't like them but respected them. Then came the day when I heard A Hard Days Night and I released I had to give these guys a chance. I continued to listen to the greatest hits collection until my dad came home with every sing Beatles' album. I was excited but only downloaded a few songs. But then one day I heard the song Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band playing over the radio. It blew my mind, I was stunned at what I had been missing out on all these years. Excited to hear the rest of the album I grabbed the CD and downloaded the rest of the album. I then listened to the rest of the album and fully discovered the full experience of the Beatles. From the opening song telling you what is head, the complex Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the sadness of She's Leaving Home, and the haunting closer of A Day In the Life, this album is packed. It's no wonder so many people call this the best album ever. From the different styles of music and sound effects make this album revolutionary. I later went on to download all the Beatles albums and became a fanatic. This album is recommend for any music lover
Free Music Review: A Great Album Now Sounds Even Better Hit: 5 Stars
I was skeptical about this remaster project at first. But after listening to the great sound quality on Sgt Pepper I'm very enthusiastic. I'm a huge fan of Paul McCartney's bass playing, and this remaster makes all those great bass lines come alive with a remarkable presence, clarity, and fullness of sound that really helps you recognize what a brilliant player he was. And finally, we get to hear Ringo's drums with a clear, present sound that adds a wonderful crisp, snap to the music. If those were the only improvements I would still say this remaster is well worth having. However, there are many other enhancements that make this updated album an absolute delight to listen to. The sound of the background vocal harmony on With a Little Help...is stunning, and She's Leaving Home has a vividness and clarity to the vocals and strings that brings this masterpiece to another level. I recommend listening to this on a good component system with the volume turned up a bit to really bring out all the nuances. If you love the Beatles, and you enjoy focused listening to the intricacies of sound and music then you should get this CD. Five stars...Highly recommended.
