Free Music Review: Use this as an entry point to The Beatles Hit: 3 StarsIn 2000, The Beatles released '1,' a single-disc, 27-track compilation spanning The Beatles' entire career, 1962 to 1970. Released on Apple in 2000, the record was digitally remastered, and before I begin my review, the sound quality on this disc is exceptional. It really is. Now, read on for my review for '1.'
While each of these 27 songs are five stars easily, I don't really recommend this disc for anybody except for the new, casual or hardcore Beatles fan. Why, you may ask?
First off, while everything here is superb, two of their finest albums go completely unrepresented. 'Rubber Soul' and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' are easily two of the finest records EVER MADE, and yet, there is NOTHING on this album from those albums. No 'Michelle,' no 'In My Life,' no 'Drive My Car,' 'Norwegian Wood,' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.' I could go on and on and on.
Also, nothing from one of their early albums, 'With the Beatles.' That means, no 'All My Loving' or 'You Really Got A Hold On Me.' These are also disappointing omissions.
The point is, it's virtually impossible to gather all of The Beatles' best songs on one disc. It has been attempted many times, including on '1.' Now this is a good disc, I own it, and I have listened to it many times. It's got many of the basics, on a positive note. Spanning 'Love Me Do,' from 1962, to 'Let It Be' and 'The Long and Winding Road,' from 1970, this disc does cover every phase of the group's career. But, the omission of songs from 'Rubber Soul' and 'Sgt. Pepper's' prevents this disc from getting five stars.
Any Beatles compilation lacking tracks from those two albums is three stars at best.
Overall, I strongly recommend '1' to the casual Beatles fan, the new Beatles fan, and for the hardcore fan just because of the slamming sound quality. But otherwise, I recommend '1962-1966' and '1967-1970,' both two disc sets, to get The Beatles best work. There, you will collect many of their great songs that are missing in action here. Get those instead.
'1,' unfortunately, can be skipped.
Free Music Review: Disappointment Hit: 1 StarsRubbish. On several tracks the lyrics were not audible. Overall the tracks sounded like studio outtakes. My refund is awaited. I have only given 1star because the system won't let me give ZERO.
Free Music Review: A classic double-disc of great music! Hit: 5 StarsBack in early 2000, Apple mentioned that it was going to release a collection containing all of The Beatles' hits that reached number one in both England and America. The album, titled, "The Beatles 1", was officially released on November 14th, 2000, just in time for holiday shopping sales. Surprisingly, this album became a huge hit release. It debuted at number one in its first week in the Billboard Top Album charts, the fourth Beatles album in a row to accomplish this feat following the 3 Anthology albums. It was also number one in 34 different countries around the world, going on to become the best selling album ever released on a global scale. The song selection is extraordinary, and each of the four sides of the vinyl represented appropriately different styles and phases of the Beatles' career: in order, Beatlemania's Mersey Beat style, folk-rock/pre-psychedelic style, purely experimental/psychedelic style, back to basics/rock style.

What you have here is over 79 minutes of Beatles classics, gathered together into one cohesive and handy set. This double album is packaged in a gatefold cover with a painted yellow "1" over a red background, and a light-pink extended T Beatles logo in the upper left-hand corner. The back of the cover lists the song titles, while the interior of the gatefold cover shows four colorful psychedelic Richard Avedon portraits of the group which were taken in London on August 17th, 1967. The custom designed labels on the records also feature the same graphics as depicted on the album's front cover. The discs themselves were pressed on specially manufactured 180 gram vinyl, which is slightly thicker and heavier than most conventional vinyl discs. This also gives the music a much cleaner and warmer sounding feel. There was also a special edition of the album released onto 2 picture discs, which feature one of each portrait on a single side (John, side 1; Paul, side 2; George, side 3; Ringo, side 4.) The two discs are housed in specially printed inner sleeves, which show a unique selection of picture sleeves on one side and information pertaining to the album's songs on the other side. This double album set also includes 8 1/4" x 11 1/4" reproductions of the of the four individual Richard Avedon portraits and a 24" x 36" poster displaying a total of 126 picture sleeves from Beatles singles that were issued in various countries around the world. The deluxe packaging of the vinyl album, along with its four portraits and poster, are reminiscent to that of "The White Album". Billboard magazine would go on to name "The Beatles 1" as its Album of the Year for 2001, and also name The Beatles as the number one group of the year, as well. Despie the fact that other Beatles albums also went to number one, "The Beatles 1" was the only Beatles album to be given the unique designation as an Album of the Year by Billboard, an honor most deservedly long overdue. What sets this particular collection apart from others is that it spans The Beatles' entire professional recording career, as well as featuring only original songs penned by the band, all in one compilation. If there is any singles album that shows the true genius of The Beatles on any level, then it is definitely "The Beatles 1".
Free Music Review: Great CD! Hit: 5 StarsThis is a great CD. Brings back memories of when I was growing up. A great collection of the most popular songs.
