Free Music Review: Not Really The Beatles

The original soundtrack to the Beatles first animated movie, "Yellow Sumbarine", is filled with six actual Beatles songs, the rest of the album is George Martin's original score for the movie. Yellow Sumbarine is probaly one of the Beatles worst albums due to the fact two of the six Beatles songs on here are taken from other albums(Yellow Sumbarine- Revolver, All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour) the other four songs besides All Together Now though are great, Only a Northern Song was recorded during the sessions for Sgt. Peppers, was never realesed on that album and was instead realesed on this album, Hey Bulldog was originally recorded by the band never realesed till this album, It's All Too Much was recorded right before Sgt. Pepper was realesed and is a psychedelic jam, rare for a band like the Beatles. Tracks 7-13 are the original score for the movie done by George Martin are OK tracks but not at all the Beatles whatsoever. All in all buy this album if you loved the movie Yellow Sumbarine, want to hear the orignal score, or just are in dire need of everything recorded by the Beatles. Yellow Sumbarine will and always will be one of the least liked Beatles album on the market yet.

This Toshiba/EMI pressing features an OBI strip (different from the last Japanese pressings issued in 1990) & an insert with Japanese text & lyrics in Japanese & English. Manufactured & pressed in Japan. This album has been direct metal mastered from a digitally remastered original tape to give the best possible sound quality. Originally released in 1969, features 13 tracks including the 7-track George Martin score. 2004.The most dashed-off of the Beatles' records, Yellow Submarine doesn't have much to it: the goofy title track and "All You Need Is Love" are reprised from earlier discs, George Martin's trifle of a score to the animated Submarine feature takes up the second half, and that leaves just four relatively insubstantial new tracks. The Beatles' throwaways are anyone else's classics, though: "Hey Bulldog," the last song Lennon and McCartney wrote in full collaboration, has the instinctive urgency of their best work, Paul's singalong "All Together Now" is awfully cute, and more than one band has dedicated its career to trying to replicate what George's guitars are doing on his dazed, pulsing "It's All Too Much." --Douglas Wolk
