Free Music Review: fine retrospective of The Bee Gees taken mostly from their disco years

The Bee Gees Greatest isn't necessarily a complete compilation of all their greatest tunes; but this one does a great job nonetheless. The sound quality is great, the artwork is cool--and many of the tracks they selected are great for dancing anytime!
"Jive Talkin'" starts off the two CD set with one of my very favorite dancing hits from this group. The beat is strong and I love that disco flavor! They sing this really well and the tune was meant to remain very recognizable even all these years later! The Bee Gees also harmonize well on "Jive Talkin';" and as you might guess I really like this tune! "Night Fever" follows; this strong hit became one of the major themes for the movie Saturday Night Fever and The Bee Gees never sounded better! The beat stays strong and the dancing/nightclub/disco feel captures my attention and makes me wanna dance NOW!
"You Should Be Dancing" really sounds great on this album; I love the tempo and key changes that this group handles effortlessly. "You Should Be Dancing" is an excellent tune. "How Deep Is Your Love" is a much more tender love ballad that works so well with their harmonizing and singing some of the lyrics perfectly. The melody gets a great arrangement; the percussion helps it along and "How Deep Is Your Love" is a major highlight of this two CD set." (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away" is another tune that is slightly less remembered, I think, perhaps because it wasn't associated with Saturday Night Fever. However, make no mistake about it--"(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away" is a beautiful, tender number about love and relationships that again showcases the fine talents of The Bee Gees.
The second CD continues the great tunes. "If I Can't Have You" has them singing and harmonizing well; I believe this is a cover of a song that another artist sang first but my memory eludes me. Anyway, The Bee Gees perform this so well that it moves me whenever I hear it; "If I Can't Have You" is a fine Bee Gees cover. "More Than A Woman" really puts them front and center; they deliver this song with panache, grace and all their hearts and souls. The musical arrangement is excellent, too. "Nights On Broadway" also tugs at my heartstrings whenever I hear it; the poignant and raw emotion strikes me as incredibly human, beautiful and memorable.
"Love You Inside Out" gives them another chance to sing and use musical special effects to great advantage; and the album closes very nicely with The Bee Gees singing and playing "Children Of The World." This features the group performing a relatively mellow ballad and it ends the CD set on a strong note (pardon the pun).
Overall, this two CD set is extremely strong even if it omits many of the earlier Bee Gees hits. This is also a great starter CD set for casual fans and newcomers as it has very popular music on both discs. If you like this set I would also recommend that you check out the very well done two CD set entitled The Bee Gees--Their Greatest Hits--The Record which has this plus earlier hits and some lesser known tunes by this group.

Did the Bee Gees get too big too fast on their second run at fame? This compilation suggests the answer is yes; their early self-reinvention as a disco-soul act yielded fabulous singles like "Jive Talkin'" and the unstoppable Saturday Night Fever trilogy of "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive," and "Night Fever," but by the end of the '70s the inspiration was gone. Bland follow-ups like "Too Much Heaven" and "Love You Inside Out" are at a minimum here, though, making Greatest for the most part an honorable alternative to the SNF soundtrack, should you want one. --Rickey WrightDance & DJ Music CDs
