Free Music Notes for The Benny Goodman Yale Archives - Volume 1 AlbumFree Music Review: Unissued Goodman, '50s-'80s Hit: 5 StarsBy agreement with Benny Goodman, Yale University became the depository of all his arrangements and master tapes after his death; shortly after his passing in 1986 a series of recordings were issued that included previously unissued material from these archival holdings recorded in various settings since the 1950s. This is the first volume and is an anthology of different Goodman-led groups performing at a number of venues.
Most are small group performances and include such stalwart players as Zoot Sims, Ruby Braff, Joe Newman, and Bill Harris among many others. Zoot is great wherever he appears, but is especially good on LULLABY IN RHYTHM, recorded at the Rainbow Grill in 1967. MARCHING AND SWINGING is a catchy tune (it was never recorded commercially) and features a fine guitar solo by Jimmie Wyble. A septet featuring Benny with Bill Harris and Flip Phillips takes a moody stroll down BROADWAY from 1959. A handful of tracks are by different Goodman big bands; a version of CHEROKEE from 1958 has a lot of Bird in its George Williams arrangement. And the most recent track, recorded only six months before Benny's death, is a great rendition of BLUE ROOM and showcases such well-known players as Randy Sandke, Dan Barrett, and Ken Peplowski (Goodman knew how to pick `em). All the sides on this CD were previously unissued in any form. It's great late-era Benny, worth any Goodman fan's attention.
