Free Music Notes for The Best of Studio OneFree Music Review: About the Audio Hit: 3 Stars5 stars for the music, minus 2 for the lousy audio.
Don't believe the hype. The remastering on all of Heartbeat's releases (since it's Studio One relaunch) has been garbage. I don't know if the company changed engineers recently or what, but the audio they were producing six/seven years ago was better than what they are putting out now. As a serious fan of vintage reggae music, I highly appreciate that this music is being released at all, but I can not understand why a "remastered" re-release at this point in time would feature such lazy presentation. For a better audio representation of Studio One, check out the fine work by Soul Jazz Records.
That being said, the Best of Studio One and Full Up (Vol.2) were two of the first reggae LPs I ever purchased, and I highly recommend this music for people looking to get into reggae. The track selection has been nicely augmented for this rerelease. However, for a one-stop introduction to Studio One with a flawless tracklist (and equally impressive remastering), newcomers should checkout Soul Jazz Records' "Studio One Classics". (note - don't pay amazon's import prices for Soul Jazz titles, check out ebreggae.com)
