Free Music Review: Rich Conaty's Best Collection Yet!

The first two Big Broadcast compilations on Rivermont are excellent--and should be in the CD library of anyone who enjoys the music of the 1920s and 1930s. To take nothing at all away from those wonderful discs, this is Rich Conaty's best collection yet. My feeling is that there is a wider variety of material here, starting with Roy Bargy's "Pianoflage" (an until-now neglected bit of Novelty Ragtime) and including the undeservedly obscure Singin' Sam (Harry Frankel) and the saucy and scandalous "Was I?" by Peggy Hill. The compilation is chronological, and lightly reaches the beginning of the Swing Era with Barney Rapp's "Bagpipe Stomp."
These recordings weren't million-selling chart-toppers--the "Greatest Hits" are available elsewhere from a variety of sources. (Included here is, in fact, a unique home aircheck of an Abe Lyman performance from 1932.) What Rich does beautifully here is convey some of the flavor of his excellent long-running "Big Broadcast" as heard on WFUV. He shares an amazing record collection with you--and it's all choice stuff.
Much praise is due to Rich as well as to Adrian Cosentini, whose correct-speed transfers are perfect, and to Bryan Wright, who is keeping the flame of vintage music burning bright with his indispensible Rivermont label.
