Free Music Notes for The Big Lebowski: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Free Music Review: 8-miles high track... better in movie.
Hit: 3 Stars

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

Free Music Review: eclectic soundtrack for eclectic movie
Hit: 3 Stars

This is my favorite movie so any apsect of it, like the music, will also be applauded by me.

I would imagine that when compiling a soundtrack for sale, there are probably legal channels and royalty issues that need to be addressed. If I was CCR, why would I want my music on anything other than my own works? Setting aside that this does not truly refect all the music in the movie, this is what I think.

I love this off-beat and totally bizarre soundtrack. The weird stringing of these mostly unrelated songs parallels the mood of the movie and personality of "The Dude".

How can I not start with psychodelic Kenny Rogers? Kenny friggin Rogers singing a scorching version of "Just dropped in to see what condition my condition is in"! What an awesome song!

How about the Gypsy Kings singing a Spanish language version of "Hotel California"? Magnificent!

The Dylan song "Man in Me" is an uncommon, uplifting song pulled from his catelog.

"Dead Flowers" is a Townes Van Zandt classic.

The strength of this cd is not in it's completeness (it's missing of some of the movies' most noted tunes) but rather, similar to some of Quentin Taratino's soundtrackness, the total randomness of the selections.

NOTE, you can pick this up for probably $5.00 so it's hard to go wrong with this. If you are a fan of the movie and can have the Kenny Rogers and Gypsy Kings songs, then how can you go wrong?

Free Music Review: Dear Ethan and Joel Coen,
Hit: 3 Stars

Thank you for a movie that has changed my life.

Having just watched the movie for the 20 something time, I have come to the realization, the sound track is a mere shadow of the original score. 'Your in a world of pain', John Goodman's speech in the bowling alley as he threaten Smoky with his life, is hung against a backdrop of and unknown song. 'The song really tied the scene together man...'I am resigned to buy DVD player JUST to read the music credits. Yes, the CCR may be in Forgarty's legal battles, but, Ethan and Joel, please in future movies, use a disclaimer the soundtrack is a mere shadow or the original. The selection of music to this movie was nothing short of brillant.

Free Music Review: Never mind Creedence, where are the Monks?
Hit: 3 Stars

When I saw the movie I was excited because I heard the song "I Hate You" by the legendary 60's garage-punk group, The Monks, playing in the background at the bowling alley. Lo and behold, it didn't make the soundtrack. The Monks will get their due one day. You probably never heard of them, but I hear Danny DeVito has bought the rights to their biography, and wants to make a movie out of it. Hopefully it will happen, and then everybody will know who they are.

Free Music Review: Not bad... but missing something.
Hit: 3 Stars

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?
