THIS is the only Bill Perry Love Scars review you need because i played guitar in his band for 2+ years...check the liner notes to Greycourt Lighting or Live at Mannys for me.
So im here to tell you that LOVE SCARS is my FAV B.P. record! I first heard it as a 20 yrold fan, brimming with curiosity for the Blues and R&B.Its been some years since ive heard it(friends stealing my copies) and im still totaly ready to expound!
The THING about Love Scars is its got real VIBE...the record actually SOUNDS BLUE...I know that sounds like some Jimi Hendrix talk (of which Bill Perry no stranger) but its for real this time...As some of the other reviews had described (although seeming to lack any real musical knowledge) the record is moody, smokey and the songs are hard won and compelling.
Let me explain the funny titles, Bill is the kinda guy who finally names a song when the record company calls him up on the phone for the track listing...he's not real detail oriented...as he likes to say 'i just push the high strings brotha'.On stage night after night he might call a song by one of the lyrics within the tune, eventually we all forget the title! In his world of WREAKING tone, DARK BLUE vocals, and WHITE HOT licks its really just all about 'catching a groove'....and GROOVE this albumn does.
You gots the FUNK, the burning Shuffle, the SLOW blues, and Bills marvelous although under-exposed skills in 6/8 time, the very minor key'd 'Settle Down Fred' and blues CLASSIC 'Fade to Blue' being examples! Love Scars also drops an adequate dose of acoustic and Dobro material, something we all hope Bill will record an entire album of one of these days.
BILL PERRY IS A MONSTER WORLD CLASS PLAYER...A LIVING BREATHING BLUES MAN WITH A VOICE, BOTH ON GUITAR AND HIS OWN, THATS AS DEEP REACHING AS IT IS UNMISTAKEABLE.
If you need some modern blues inspiration, look no further.this music will guide you and your stereo for years to come.
