Free Music Notes for Black Crowes - Greatest Hits 1990-1999: Tribute Work in Progress

Free Music Review: Rock 'N' Roll
Hit: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this CD! There are a ton of good songs on this disc(and some songs that I haven't heard also). They all rock. If you like simple straight forward music with a good blues edge, I highly recommend this one.

Free Music Review: Good introduction to the band, but the die hards need not apply
Hit: 4 Stars

The greatest hits package is a solid reflection of the Black Crowes to date. The first half of the CD is their early music which tend to include their biggest "radio" hits. The second half is a little less radio friendly but a little more jam heavy. I wasn't as familiar with the songs on the second half but I like them just as much, if not more, than the hits. Die hard Crowes fans, of which I know a few, don't need this CD because they probably own most of the Black Crowes albums already. But this is a good compilation for somebody like me, who isn't a hardcore Crowes fan, but generally like their music and have followed them from a distance since the days of "Jealous Again."

Free Music Review: A Great Bunch Of Songs
Hit: 5 Stars

No new songs, no alternate takes just key moments from this very unique hybrid of a band that people compare to a mixture of the Faces in it's rollicking drunken sway, the Stones in it's rock and roll flow, Zeppelin in it's hard rocking ways and blues tones..yet for those new to the Crowes and the earlier bands from the 60's and 70's perhaps a key influence on these guys that I hear more than any other is Humble Pie...not only the rasp and boogie stomping of Steve Marriott but that whole Ray Charles shout funk coming after the departure of the more folk oriented Frampton morphing into a rock and soul revue familiar to those who dig the gospel blues of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishman,or Delaney and Bonnie and for that matter when Humble Pie used the female Blackberries as backup singers.
We all must have been listening to Humble Pie's Thunderbox album at the same time..
Also let's not forget The Butterfield Blues Band, The Allman Brothers, Lynrd Skynnard because the Crowes are good musicians with an ear to the South..
You won't be sorry with this one and yes the Crowes still sound unique.

Free Music Review: The (extremely) Poor Man's Rolling Stones
Hit: 2 Stars

I can't, for the life of me, understand the appeal, or better, the necessity for the Black Crowes. To call all the riffs recycled is to give them credit for originality they don't possess...There's nothing here that hasn't been done better, with more creativity and feeling, and of course, originality, by the Stones, Faces, et al...And it's not a valid counter-argument that the Stones stole from the great blues masters, because, of course, they did...but what they also did is add some value, something of their own, that was completely fresh...What these guys have done is the aural equivalent of sewing a new name tag on...

Free Music Review: The Black Crowes rock with great intensity
Hit: 5 Stars

This is actually the first album that I have ever listen to from The Black Crowes. For some reason I never got around to listening to them before and didn't know what they were all about. A friend of mine who's a big fan of theirs lend me this album to listen to and I was blown away. I love every song they sound really good, I am a big fan of classic rock and blues and the Crowes mix these two styles in practically every song on this CD and they do a fantastic job at it. My favorites are "She Talks To Angels" (a beautiful ballad and soul stirring) I also love "Remedy" this song jams and I love both the lyrics and music on this one. "Jealous Again" and "Hard To Take" are awesome. "Thorn On My Pride" is a great song as well and the lyrics are very nice also. This is a great album overall and I am glad that my friend let me this album to listen to. I now know what I had been missing by not discovering this band at an earlier time when they were in their heyday which was in the 1990's. I'm going to buy this album right now because is a great one and I have to included in my music collection of all time great rock n roll albums of all times. I look forward to seeing The Black Crowes live, I hope they're still touring if they sound in concert as great as they sound on record than they are a really great rock band which as far as I am concern just by listening to this fantastic CD they are indeed.
