Free Music Review: Completely Blown Away
Hit: 5 Stars

I consider myself a casual BC fan. I saw the Crowes doing an acoustic set on Palladium (HD Music channel) and it got me re-interested in them. I came to Amazon.com and listened to a few samples and from what I heard, it sounded great! So I went and bought the album, popped it in, and from beginning to end was BLOWN AWAY. I have not heard ROCK MUSIC in YEARS!!! THIS was what I have been missing all these years. Oh Josephine is one of the most soulful songs I have heard. Locust St. is an awesome low-key song, and when you throw these songs on here with songs like Evergreen and Walk Believer Walk, you have the perfect rock album. Just, incredible. If you are a fan of ROCK, not this crap that is being put out these days, but true rock.....especially southern rock.....BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Free Music Review: Outstanding Album - The Best Since Amorica
Hit: 5 Stars

2008's Warpaint finds the Black Crowes in a very good place, musically. I am giving the CD its third straight spin as a I compose this, and I believe that several tracks on this bad boy are destined to become classics. "Josephine" and "Evergreen" are back-to-back moody groovers, the best tracks on the CD with some phenomenal playing from the ENTIRE band, old and new members. My only beef is with "Movin' on Down The Line," of which its structure and progression I still can't get into. Welcome, Luther Dickinson and Adam MacDougall! Let's skip the pointless comparisons to Ford, Harsch, etc. and just enjoy a classic Crowes work, with a lot of "Amorica" and a touch of "Southern Companion."

Free Music Review: Crowes return to Amorica
Hit: 5 Stars

After two dismal outings (Lions and By Your Side), the crowes finally hit pay dirt again. A new direction, but with the same likability of Southern Harmony, Amorica, and Three Snakes. Strong music and lyrics. Mix of Southern rock, country, blues, soul. It's hard not to shake it when you hear Movin on Down the Line and God's got it (a cover). The slower songs, Oh Josephine, Locust Street, and There's Gold in them Hills all stand out. Whoa Mule is the best closer they've had since Descending on Amorica. The heavier songs are laced with funky interludes and great jams, great turns, great choruses. I found highlights in every song, and it will definitely make for a great live setlist.

Free Music Review: the Crowes sit on a high roost
Hit: 5 Stars

For anyone that loves classic rock, the Black Crowes are the closest you can get these days. This disc in particular showcases their talent, their influences, and their incredible soul. Warpaint clearly put the Crowes back on the map following their mid-2000's hiatus and was a good foundation for what has come since. I honestly can't put this down (after a few years now), and there really isn't a bad song on it. Some of these songs are the best rock songs they've written since the early 90's. The Crowes have matured over the years, and I think they are now better than ever. After you fall in love with this one too, check out Warpaint Live for some extended plays and covers.

Free Music Review: masterpiece? seems to be.
Hit: 5 Stars

Although this album seems to have more than one less-than-inspired song structure and individual performance, in actuality it's a trick. The album and its individual songs constitute a remarkable piece of American rock music. The group is in total control of their vision. Don't misinterpret the at times restrained and intentionally understated playing for blandness. It's supposed to be that way and the result is just marvelous. Is it a concept album? I think it qualifies. Is it greater than the sum of its parts? Yes. A modern day masterpiece that blossoms with American musical roots. Damn.
