Free Music Notes for Miasma

Free Music Review: Best Album
Hit: 5 Stars

The guy below me doesn't entirely know what he is talking about. For one there are 2 vocalist, they just print that Trevor is the only one. You can listen to "I'm Charming", "Flies", "Spite Suicide", and "Miamsa" with backup vocals. I've seen the band 3 times live to prove it and Brian E. is the one doing them. Another, what makes this album so great is how all the songs DO have melody. BDM is called MELODIC death metal. No melody would = Cannibal Corpse, they are good but very straight forward, brutal riffs coming from CC. The drums on Miasma are incredible. Zach Gibson did an extreme job with the writing. All drummers should learn to appreciate him a lot more. The vocals are one of a kind, ranging from high screams to low growls. The guitars are INCREDIBLE. I recently talked to the ex drummer Zach Gibson..he claimed Brian doesn't know how to write music, I beg to differ. Brian and John know what they are doing and created the best album ever!!!

Free Music Review: BDM ups the ante and out does their excellent debut.
Hit: 5 Stars

With "Unhallowed" The Black Dahlia Murder quickly established themselves in the United states metal scene. Few bands have managed to release such a powerful debut. I went to high school with John K., current lead guitarist for BDM, and it really wasn't until he joined the band that BDM took a serious turn toward death metal, moving away from the blast beat thrash heard on "Unhallowed" in which one could detect a hint of hardcore influence. On "Miasma" that hint of hardcore has all but disappeared, instead being replaced by riffing that smacks of death metal greats Decapitated and more grove than I know what to do with. I recall hearing John warming up on some riffs off of "Nihility" and I turned to my friend Dave and said, "I'll bet ten bucks BDM's next album has some Decapitated influence." The opening riffs of "Flies" (my favorite track, incidentally) is a testament to this influence.

On "Miasma" the song writing has matured immensely but nary a single ounce of intensity has been lost in the process. While the band has adopted a more death metal posturing, the melody and catchiness that characterized "Unhallowed" and made it so easy to enjoy is still present throughout, and thankfully so. The album's production is excellent. Clear and precise, each instrument shines through piercingly so. There is a little less low-end than I might wish, but unlike most death metal bands, BDM has some killer melody that needs to shine through. When I first picked this up, had I written a review I would have said that over the course of the album the songs lose some steam, and the album's strong beginning doesn't hold up start to finish. However, after subsequent listens I have changed my position. This album is solid start to finish. The songs at the end of the album do have a different feel than the opening tracks, but they're all solid.

At a time when metal bands, as soon as they get big, decide to tone down their sound in hopes of pumping up record sales (see, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, The Haunted), BDM took the popularity gained form their debut and ran with it instead of milking it for money. "Miasma" is harder, faster, and fiercer than "Unhallowed" and I can't think of a better continuation of their unique sound. It's debatable whether BDM is doing anything `new' in the world of metal, but who is these days? What is certain is that the band has taken what they love (playing metal) and forced themselves to write serious, mature music that should please any metal head.

Free Music Review: Liked it the very first time I played it
Hit: 4 Stars

Miasma is an excellent album, combining power, speed, and melody in almost equal portions. I enjoyed this album the very first time I played it, and have lost no love with each play. The band manages to bring aspects of the 80's style of melodic metal, but does so while remaining technical and without sounding cheesy. It should be noted that the songs sound even better when listened through headphones as you can hear the two guitars, in stereo, complement each other. The songs are all fast and full of pure metal energy. The only downside is that this album does not stray far from a particular sound. Although the songs do not all sound alike, there is not a lot of variety in the style or tempo from song to song. Likewise, the singing is limited in its scope. And, it should be noted the album is only about a half-an-hour long. This album is less ground-breaking, and more of a "meat-and-potatoes" metal album. But we all need our meat-and-potatoes as they are the staples of our diet.

Free Music Review: 3 1/2
Hit: 3 Stars

I still am having mixed feelings about this album. I really loved BDM first CD, "Unhollowed, which I would give a solid 4 1/2 effort, but somehow this one falls somewhat short. Muscially its pretty strong, and the vocals are still done to the "T", yet I am having problem with the lyric content of the album. The lyrics were so much more conplex on "Unhollowed" and not just because they were dark and evil, but it just seemed to fit with the bands style more. I have read through the lyrical content many times, I just can't seem have a freakin clue about what each song is supposed to be about. I realize that the band states that the songs are supposed to be about, but I just am not picking up on it. Dont get me wrong the album is still heavy and quick, but there seems to be a big change from the Darkness of Unhollowed, this one is a bit slopper, and seems a bit repeatitive. I think I might have to give this one a few more listens, as I only went through the CD 2x. Maybe it will grow on me more as I listen to it. Its still strong, but falls very short to the genius of "Unhollowed." Once again, I am disappointed with the lyrical content as it just doesnt the words just dont seem to match the anger of the music. Maybe I am just missing something, or being ignorent, but I am going to listen to this more through the week, and see if it will grow on me a bit more.
