Free Music Review: The Black Keys = A Different Approach
Hit: 5 Stars

Attack & Release is no doubt the most accessible album released by The Black Keys. It was the first one recorded "properly", and the sound quality is noticeably more clean.

That said, it does not tamper with the band's raw blues-rock sound. Their first single getting airplay in Detroit, "I Got Mine" is a mind-blowing rock tune. Attack & Release is perhaps more funky sounding than previous works, such as the strange flute sounds on "Same Old Thing". "Strange Times" is a very powerful track, and also can be heard in Grand Theft Auto IV. "Psychotic Girl" is funky and seems to be a crowd favorite during live shows.

Attack & Release is a fresh, blues rock sound that really shows the Black Keys flexibility in the studio. People looking to listen to this band for the first time, try this CD.

Free Music Review: Smokin' baby
Hit: 5 Stars

Smokin' baby, smokin hot crunchy blues rock. this is destined to be a classic; i didn't think they could out do Rubber Factory but this album introduces a dimension of the keys heretofore unseen. Managing to sound well produced and raw at the same time, this is hands down the hottest rock record so far this year. Listen to the hip-hop/blues stomp of "So he won't Break" and when the squealing lead guitar rips into the groove after the second verse, and you know there is magic going on. The production really emphasizes all of the Keys best assets. "Same old thing" is equally an equally funky, urban affair. "Oceans and Streams" and "Lies" are also standouts. What a surprising Album. Dan says it best on the closing track "its about time you see, that things aint like they used to be..." and after this album, they surely aint what they used to be, they're even better!

Free Music Review: Danger Mouse Is All Right
Hit: 5 Stars

Some reviews have indicated that The Black Keys suffered from the production of Danger Mouse in Attack and Release. I dissent. Remember, Danger Mouse (aka Brian Joseph Burton) has produced some big winners in addition to this album, e.g., St. Elsewhere and Demon Days.

I almost never object to a lot of "bells and whistles" that are skillfully woven into the music. Simplicity for simplicity's sake is absurd.

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album for a couple of months now. Stand out tracks include "Psychotic Girl" (is that a banjo?) and "Lies." Listen to the lyrics of "Lies." I think that's how we all want to go.

The Black Keys remind me a little of Joe South with a heavy dose of blues infused. Dan Auerbach's vocals give the tunes a quality of suffering that has been endured and overcome.

Free Music Review: Great bluesy rock
Hit: 5 Stars

Although "Strange Times" and "I Got Mine" are more upbeat than the album as a whole, if you like the singles you will probably enjoy Attack & Release. These guys certainly have more depth than your average trendy alt-rock single band. I've started working my way backwards through The Black Keys' catalog as a result of how good this album is - what better endorsement could a listener give?

Not to judge, but I'd hazard a guess that the people rating this CD with 1 star are indier-than-thou listeners who feel some need to trash a release that's gotten air time. So far as I can tell, this is a great starting point for people interested in The Black Keys... but maybe I should reserve the right to edit this review after I've got Rubber Factory and decide that all other sounds are garbage by comparison!

Free Music Review: An Excellent Progression
Hit: 5 Stars

The earlier works of the Black Keys were fantastic. I really didn't know what to expect when I was picking up Attack & Release. After hearing that the Black Keys would be working with Danger Mouse, I was a little worried. Was the Black Keys raw style of blues rock coming to an end?

After listening to this album multiple times I grew to appreciate the new direction the Black Keys were going. In my opinion this album is near flawless. While Danger Mouse's touch is noticed, it is not overbearing. Attack & Release not only surpassed my expectation but now I am excited to hear their next release. The Black Keys followed a artistic progression and nailed it.

One of my favorite albums this year. Attack & Release gets extremely high play in my mp3 player.
