Free Music Notes for Attack and ReleaseFree Music Review: Whither the Attack? Whither the Release Hit: 3 Stars
Who is this "Danger Mouse"? Is he like the Brian Eno of the aught years, laying waste to good bands with too much mellowed out production? Why is it that he seems to hate the human voice and insists on distorting it?
When last I left the Black Keys, thery were in a Rubber Factory. The music was raw and cool. It was blues, dirty and real, and you could draw the direct line from rock to its progenitor. Love that album.
Now I come back to the Keys and...I guess I should have known from the title that there would be too much fancy computer pyrotechnics involved. I guess they didn't want to warn us by putting in Decay or Sustain in the title.
Music's not bad. It's just not Black Keys great is all. I prefered man, guitar, other man, drums. I'll give it a couple more listens, but it's not going in heavy rotation.
Free Music Review: No Thickfreakness Hit: 3 Stars
As a fan of TBK and owner of everything they have ever produced I bought this album even knowing the potential pitfalls.
Yes, it is better than what a lot of bands are putting out, which makes it good.
However it is not to the standards we expect from TBK.
This doesn't even come close to the dirt and grit of Thickfreakness or Rubber Factory.
The chunky riffs are apparent on maybe half the songs on this album.
Bottom line? Too slick.
That being said, I just saw the boys live here in Seattle and it was all raw!!!!
In this day and age with so many side projects from bands they should have grabbed a vocalist and released this under a different name.
Consider this Danger Mouse thing a failed experiment.
I will be anxiously awaiting your next album.
Free Music Review: I'm a little sad... Hit: 3 Stars
listening to this latest Black Keys album. I know it's very popular to love this album and the collaboration between Danger Mouse and the Keys, but it just ain't got the simple beauty of their earlier stuff. While I agree with others that innovation and change are good things for bands to explore, I do not think that is what happened here. It feels to me like they just dressed up some old concepts and dulled the edge that makes the early stuff so great. I also agree that Magic Potion was not very inspired, but I do miss being amazed by the incredible depth of the early, simple, raw, recordings. It's possible to innovate without losing the soul.
Free Music Review: Too polished Hit: 3 Stars
Where's the raw blues sound that made then who they are? Don't get me wrong, they are still the best band out there, and probably the best band to come out in the last decade or so. I like that they are trying some new sounds but this album is missing everything that I loved about this band. I don't really blame them, I blame Danger Mouse. Hopefully on the next album Danger Mouse stays as far away from them as possible. Danger Mouse is good, but not for this band. Dan Auerbach should just produce the next album on his own...he did a hell of a job with the Radio Moscow album.
Free Music Review: Not their best album Hit: 3 Stars
The Black Keys have ventured far from their break-out album The Big Come Up, and while some of the songs still rock, most of the album sounds over-produced. The gritty, wailing guitar sound that makes the The Black Keys so great seems to have taken a haitus. But, all that said, tracks 1 and 2 seems to be a step in the right direction, hopefully they'll see that for their next album.
