Free Music Notes for Spirit of the CenturyFree Music Review: Blind Boys Get Down! Hit: 5 Stars
I have followed the Blind Boys of Alabama since the 1950s. This is the record I have been wishing they would make for a long time. It recalls the glory days of their early work (the "Stand By Me" period). It fulfills the promise of their amazing appearance in "The Gospel at Colonus." And it is hip. Having already covered Dylan and Richard Thompson, they now turn their ears to tunes by Tom Wait, Ben Harper, and Jagger/Richards, as well as a brilliant selection of timeless gospel numbers. Yes, they are getting old now and their powers are somewhat diminished. But not their soul power. They may not hit the high screams and hold them for half an eternity like they used to, but they can still put a chill right down in your bones. And they may sit down while they sing these days, but you won't be sitting down while you listen, if you can help it.
Free Music Review: This is a listening experience unlike anything you have ever heard Hit: 5 Stars
This is my prize CD. I am shocked tht it is not available for purchase on Amazon right now. It is an essential in any music lover's collection. This is AMERICAN MUSIC! It digs into your soul, it makes your whole body move, it transforms you. Those gravelly harmonies, the amazing range, the entire CD is full of memorable unforgettable songs. You do NOT have to be a bible thumping Christian to "get" the music. The inclusion of the legendary back-up artists, musicians is a testament to the respect and admiration the Blind Boys of Alabama enjoys in the real world of music. It transcends gospel. It is Gospel that that gets into your heart and mind and makes you glad you have ears to hear such joy, such rhythm, such music that makes you glad to be alive.
It is an essential album.
Free Music Review: So Glad I Bought This! Hit: 5 Stars
I heard a piece on National Public Radio about the group and this album that included sound bits of some of the cuts. Given the talent of the artists, the material (including traditional gospel tunes and two songs penned by Tom Waits) and the back-up artists (including John Hammond), this is definitely a must-have CD. Check out "Amazing Grace" (to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun") and "Soldier." This may be the best music purchase I've made in two or three years. Highly recommended for both gospel and blues fans. If you like the music of Mighty Sam McLain and the Holmes Brothers, you'll love these guys. You'll also enjoy this if you liked the movie "The Apostle."
Free Music Review: Great singing plus Supergroup backup Hit: 5 Stars
Of course the Blind Boys are great and their song selection and arrangements are top notch (I especially like their rendition of Amazing Grace to the tune of House of the Rising Sun!), but what really makes this recording special for me is the Super-group they've assembled to back them up; John Hammond (electric guitar and dobro), Michael Jerome (drums), David Lindley (Oud, electric and slide guitars), Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica), and Danny Thompson (double bass) - these guys are all fantastic musicians and make for a very special eclectic recording of contemporary gospel/blues sounds - mostly traditional songs, but also two from Tom Waits, and one from Ben Harper and The Rolling Stones.
Free Music Review: Grammy Material Hit: 5 Stars
"Good Lord!" That's what the Blind Boys of Alabama are saying on their new CD, SPIRIT OF THE CENTURY. It's what you'll be saying before the end of the first song when you listen to this CD. Listed as Blues/Gospel, it raises the bar for that genre. These guys have been getting great reviews for some time, but this is solid grammy material. The collection of songs works on every level. From the choice of songs and arrangements to the recording and production, the quality is first rate. This stellar performance is aided by some session men of distiction who are obviously quite at home with this music. Five stars for this one!
