Free Music Review: Oh Yeah!
Hit: 5 Stars

Get down! What vitamins are these boys on? Technically a gospel group, the Blind Boys of Alabama, with a little help from their overly talented friends, have just produced the blues CD of the new millennium. I mean, this is it, the cat's pajamas, baby!

Although into their 70's, the Boys sing with a spine tingling raw power that will lift your spirits on high. Enriched by the likes of Charlie Musslewhite and John Hammond, Spirit of the Century will have you moving and goving, body and soul throughout. There's no downtime on this puppy. None.

From first note to last, this really is the spirit of the century of the blues.

Free Music Review: better with age
Hit: 5 Stars

Okay, I admit it. I've loved these guys for awhile now. I am a bit biased. I thought that it couldn't get any better than their live House of Blues recording "I Brought Him With Me". That CD has been one of my most played since it's release (and my most recommended gospel/blues/rock cd). "Spirit of the Century" simply surpasses all of my expectations. It rocks. Buy this CD, you will not be disappointed. Way back when I was young we jokingly sang "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun". Only the Blind Boys could do it and do it right. No joke here, it is beautiful.

Free Music Review: Unbelievable
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama for the first time on Austin City Limits, singing "Amazing Grace." I remember being completely drawn in at the harmony and the rendition, as it sounded almost like a chain gang. The beginning cadence sounds a bit like "The House of the Rising Sun," but you forget about that once the vocals start in. The rest of the CD is equally moving. I've read other reviews claiming goosebumbs, tears, etc. -- my sentiments exactly. Bravo.

I heard a new song of their's (equally fabulous) on the radio a few days ago but suppose the CD has not yet been released -- I'm waiting!

Free Music Review: beautiful melding of blues and gospel
Hit: 5 Stars

If you enjoy blues and/or gospel, ther's a good chance you will like this CD very much. The Blind Boys have been touring with Peter Gabriel this year and that is the first I'd heard of them, though they've been performing together for decades. There are many traditionals here, as well as songs written by Tom Waits, Ben Harper and Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. While most songs are performed extremely well using a classic blues style and conventional instruments, Amazing Grace is performed to the tune of House of the Rising Sun. Wonderful album.

Free Music Review: You don't have to be a big gospel fan to enjoy this
Hit: 5 Stars

The Blind Boys reach out here to broaden their base beyond the traditional gospel fan. They start out by covering material by the Rolling Stones (I just wanna see his face from Exile On Main Street), Tom Waits, and others. They add some mainstream guest stars to further broaden the appeal. There's blues, rock, soul here all blended together expertly.
This won a number of awards and deservedly so. I'm sure there's many people who didn't realize that they can enjoy gospel music until they listened to this.
