Free Music Review: unquestionably a beautiful record of the '90's
Hit: 5 Stars

The breeders where my first love!! I can remember loving smashing pumpkins while all the other kids where listen to nirvana and green day. And then I got the tape with the pixies on side A and then last splash on the other... My first taste of 4AD. Wow!! Well suffice to say the tape is now in a state of definant direpair. the breeders where the fuel for the fire of my teens and though I have moved on they still forever hold a place of unquestionable sentimant on my ceedee rack. the art in itself is supremely beautiful: that bleeding-black heart on the cover... The music is, true to 4AD, altenate in all respects from a guitar based group. volatile and soothing then explosive, the strangled voice of the seamlessly endless mad lucas and roi, the sing along sounds of cannonball and divine hammer the country bumkin' twang of drivin' on 9... The breeders even offered sample fodder for the prodigy when they used a break from s. o. s. for their track "firestarter" ! Last splash still stands as a classic, unquestionably a beautiful record of the '90's

Free Music Review: "Why The Breeders are my favorite band" by: A Little Nothing
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is a bit of an acquired taste, but you'll never regret acquiring it. The album is strong yet polished, making full use of echo, chorusing and rotating speaker effects for a hypnotic, almost psychadelic sound. Kim Deal teams up w/her twin sister Kelly on Last Splash to produce vocals that are shimmery and 3-dimensional. Jim Macpherson's control and finesse on the drums balances the album nicely and shifts w/the moods of every song lending character and power. Josephine Wiggs holds everying together nicely with her solid basswork. She is intricate at times, giving the music a heavy undercurrent, and sometimes simple and understated letting the vocals shine through. The entire album is well balanced and shows the scope and flexibility of The Breeders as they push the limits and explore the blending of different generes. While Last Splash doesn't have the raw charm of Pod, it's just as energetic and a good listen anytime (but I recommend it while driving in the summer). If you think you know everything about punk...

Free Music Review: Recognize genius when it stares you in the face...

"Last Splash" is a grand design, a pure perfect pop album. Too bad it really was their "Last Splash"...Seamlessly beautiful...

Free Music Review: Decent alternative fare
Hit: 3 Stars

Released as it was during the onslaught of alternative music upon the mainstream in 1993, this album has the feel of a one time knock-off. Much of what is here is decent, but not memorable. "Cannonball" was the over-played hit. Better tracks include "Mad Lucas," "Divine Hammer," and "Drivin' on 9." But overall there is nothing here that other female-led bands of the era, like Throwing Muses, the group the Breeders most resemble, didn't do better.

Free Music Review: A wonderful album
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a wonderful album, and here are three great reasons. One: "Do You Love Me Now", perhaps the finest song in rock history that was not a hit single. Two: "Drivin' on 9", a wistful cover of a classic Ed's Redeeming Qualities tune(featuring Carrie Bradley from ERQ on violin). Three: "Cannonball", a warm reminder of those halcyon days of 1993, when alternative rock really mattered.
