Free Music Review: THE BREEDERS: Nobody's cooler than Kim Deal
Hit: 4 Stars

OK, so if you know the Pixies, you know Kim Deal-- the attention-grabbing bass player who got to show off her vocals on some songs such as "Gigantic". After the Pixies split, Kim Deal created "The Breeders" with her twin, Kelly Deal. The songs on "Last Splash" are raw, bass-filled, and fun. They got their hit with "Cannonball", but "No Aloha", "Divine Hammer", "Drivin' On 9" and "Do You Love Me Now?" make this album a must-have 90's alternative gem.

Free Music Review: Ace
Hit: 3 Stars

This is the album that the Breeders are trying to follow up for about eight years. This could have been the album of the 90's. Grungy bass lines, punky guitars, sarcastic lyrics and the beautiful voice of Kim Deal. The things that let the album unenjoyable are the soaring, joyless "Mad Lucas", pointless "Roi" and the final, where the replise of "Roi" waits for us. Other than those cold numbers, the 93' hit "Cannonball" (I really love the video of it) is really ace, the keyboads in "Invisible Man" are haunting, "Do You Love Me Now?" , "Saints", "Hag" and "Drivin' On 9" are just pleasures to listen to. Intelligent rock and roll but their debut "Pod" was much more tunefull...

Free Music Review: ALMOST PERFECT...
Hit: 4 Stars

The catchy, energetic "Cannonball" is the showpiece of this exceptional album... along with countless other brilliant songs. Of course they are not literally countless since there is a finite number of songs here, but the entire albums blends together an intoxicating concoction of flavours from Kim Deal, twin sis Kelley Deal as Tanya Donelly's replacement... and all you get is great, melodic music... there's not a disappointing song here... track 3 is lovely, "No Aloha" is bizarre and extremely addictive, "Drivin' on 9" is a must have for any road trip mix tapes, "Do You Love Me Now?" is exquisite ("If I saw you now, could I look in your eyes? Do you think of me, like I dream of you? Do you wish you were here? Like I wish I was with you... You loved me before... Do you love me now? " with Kim Deal's cutely sexy vocals and grinding guitars...) Track 8 is another outstanding one... why can't I remember the title? (All my CD sleeves are in America, while my CDs are here in Iceland with me!) Ah, maybe the title is "I Just Wanna Get Along"... ah yes, completely infectious! The otherworldly, underwatery track 9 is another listening pleasure... and track 13 is among my favourites repeating, "Summer is ready... when you are..." Listening to Last Splash is like an overload for the senses, so get ready!

Free Music Review: An alternative masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

I listened to this CD again after a prolonged hiatus, and was reminded what a truly wonderful album this is. Like other reviewers have noted, this album was a shining example of what the alternative movement initially promised--adventure, intimacy, life-affirming abandon, fun. The album features one of the great singles of all time, Cannonball, but truly has to be listened to as a whole to appreciate the extraordinary quality of what they accomplished here. The album has such a wonderful flow, a sense of childlike disinhibition, yet is tautly produced from start to finish with not one errant or hesitant note, in my opinion. It manages to sound glossy and powerful, yet spontaneous and heartfelt. Kim Deal's songs charm you in more different ways than you thought possible, even more so when they're performed by this lovably scruffy little band with a kickass drummer to hold it together. Too bad what's left of the alternative revolution can't hold a candle to this great little CD. Kim Deal, where are you now that we really need you?

Free Music Review: Whatever happened to Kim Deal?
Hit: 5 Stars

Nobody's praised "Mad Lucas?" "Idiots and palsie-eeed..." Not sure if Kim sang that one, but that's some kind of wild song. My other personal favorite is "Drivin' on 9." Talk about a summertime driving song. Here's my little Kim Deal story: Saw a Pixies show back at college, then went to a party afterward and got drunk. At some point (it's a hazy memory), Kim Deal and (I believe) Joey Santiago showed up at the party. I do recall pumping the keg and holding the tap, pouring a beer for Ms. Deal as she held out her cup.
