Free Music Review: "Mountain Battles" triumphs...
Hit: 5 Stars
I really don't understand how people can simplify such a remarkably complex achievement. I can see how some looking for some kind of "OK Computer" leap would find it unimpressive, but that obviously wasn't the aim. It seems as though Kim is growing older, and she's exploring the roots of her past with the Pixies and with the same signatures and trademarks that made her unique to begin with. Regalame Esta Noche, for example, takes us back to the multi-lingual diatribes and conversations shared between Frank Black and herself [see Surfer Rosa]. Ultimately, her talent for blending power-pop w/ unique chord progressions and simple but unique lyrics can and will always blow MY mind, and I think that if you take this album in without expectation, you'll feel the same. 5 stars, hands down, not only for being one of the most relaxing albums of the year, but also embodying a large pallet of emotions utilizing some of the darkest, emotive and experimental melodies plausible. God damn.

Since then, of course, Kim Deal has been part of one of the most highly successful and warmly received music reunions of all time, getting back together with the rest of The Pixies for a series of exhilarating live shows in 2004 and 2005. After that, Kim headed back to Dayton, Ohio to start writing a new record. Mountain Battles is the result. It's an album which captures all the bittersweet electricity of classic Breeders records like Pod and Last Splash, and which breaks new ground at the same time; classic sounding, yet as relevant and exciting as ever.
