I found "Voice Of The Heart" to be a weak effort. At best it's somewhat uneven and patchy. It's a collection of songs which were outtakes, not good enough to be included on the albums they were originally recorded for.
I do like three songs from this album, "Ordinary Fool", "You're Enough" and "Prime Time Love" are all good tracks, but still not up to par with Carpenters' works from the 70's.
"Now" is not Karen Carpenter's strongest vocal performance, her voice is thin and lacks the verve she had in earlier years. Although it is lyrically a beautiful piece.
"Look To your Dreams" and "Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore" are both pleasant songs, but again in parts of these songs Karen's vocal becomes shrill and thin as she's singing too high and out of her comfort range.
"Make Believe It's Your First Time" is an overly sugary confection that is almost unbearable, the recording of this song on Karen's solo album is far superior.
"Two Lives" is an average Carpenters song which really doesn't go too far in inspiring the listener. Again, this is not one of Karen's best vocal performances.
"At The End Of The Song" lacks direction and lies flat. Like the other songs on this collection, Karen's voice becomes shrill in the higher ranged vocals.
The Carpenters' 1975 album "Horizon" is a much better record if you want some great Carpenters music. Karen's solo album also stands head and shoulders above "Voice Of The Heart".
"Voice Of The Heart" is only for the die-hard Carpenters fan.
