Free Music Notes for The Cars - Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: There are better compilations out there
Hit: 2 Stars

I only give this album two stars because it is now obsolete and should be deleted from the band's back catalog. There have been two better compilations released since this one came along in 1985 - "Just What I Needed - The Cars Anthology" and "The Cars Complete Greatest Hits" (even the title of that one seems to be a dig at this disc's anemic track listing).... "Complete Greatest Hits" is available on Amazon.com for quite a bit less than this one and includes 8 more songs!

The songs on this one are pretty much the cream of the Cars' crop through 1985, but as is usually the case you always complain about what's not here as opposed to what is. "Bye-Bye Love", "Moving In Stereo", "You're All I've Got Tonight", "Candy-O", "It's All I Can Do", "Dangerous Type", "Gimme Some Slack", "Don't Tell Me No", "Hello Again", and "Why Can't I Have You" are not included here. Also of course, hits from "Door To Door" ("You Are The Girl", "Coming Up You", "Strap Me In") are not included since that album came out two years after "Greatest Hits".

Plus, the title track from "Heartbeat City" IS on here. Truly the lamest track from that disc, and inexplicably one of the 3 or 4 they did at Live Aid, this tune must really have some deep meaning to the band for it to be here instead of any of the tunes I mentioned earlier. It wasn't a hit, wasn't heard on the radio with any regularlity to my knowledge, and is a pretty weak song to boot.

I bought this album on cassette the day it came out in 1985, because it was the best you could do for Cars hits at that point. I have since bought both "Just What I Needed" (which includes all of the tunes I mentioned except "Bye-Bye Love" and "Coming Up You") and "Complete Greatest Hits" (which does include "Bye Bye Love" and most of the other songs I mentioned). Don't waste time on this one, check out one of those other two and see which fits you best.

Free Music Review: The Cars' Rocking Best Hits!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Cars were a group destined to be quickly forgotten in terms of who they were, for they lived professional lives that were marginal in the sense that they recorded and toured, but were hardly interested in the hard rock life style. Instead, it is the body of music that they left behind that will be remembered, for they were incredibly successful at turning out song after song, with each dancing its way all the way into the top ten hit list. From "Just What I Needed' to "Since You're Gone", from "You Might Think", from "Good Times Roll" to "Touch And Go", this is a collection of songs that make you want to hear more. And there is plenty more here for your listening enjoyment, from "Drive" to "Tonight She Comes", from "My Best Friend's Girl" to "Heartbeat City", from "let's Go" to "I'm Not The One". My personal favorites here are "Magic", and of course, the terrific "Shake It Up", but all of these songs are great. Enjoy!

Free Music Review: You really want "The Complete Greatest Hits"
Hit: 1 Stars

This album is NOT the end-all, be-all Cars collection. Sure, it's got some of their hits, but if you are looking for one Cars album, get the newer "Complete Greatest Hits." You will be far happier. "Greatest Hits" will leave you unsatisfied.

Free Music Review: Rev Up Your Engine
Hit: 5 Stars

This album used to be one of my essential companions when I first got my own car. It has a sort of feel good music excellently combining Europian techno-pop with mainstream American rock.

My favorites are mostly uptempo ones such as You Might Think, Shake It Up and Let's Go which perfectly fit for the driving. But their ballads are outstanding as well such as Drive featuring Benjamin Orr and I'm Not the One featuring Ric Ocasek.

If you like music to lighten up your mind this compilation is one of my top recommendation.

Free Music Review: Most of the hits, No Chaff
Hit: 5 Stars

It has most of the songs I like and none of the ones I don't. It is rare that I like all of the tracks on an album.
