Free Music Notes for The Cars - Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: Oh Oh - It's Magic!!! (almost)
Hit: 4 Stars

CALLING ALL CARS FANS! Except for The Beatles (I have ALL of their stuff) most of my records (my vinyl LP's as well as my CD's) consist of "Greatest Hits" collections. I try to get the most "bang for my buck," so to speak. As time goes on, I question my own premise that GH collections will have ALL the songs from that group/artist that I like. With The Beatles "1" somebody FINALLY decided to use the entire 80-minute CD capacity and STUFF IT full of music and give the fans their money's worth (I agree that there's STILL argument about what songs are/aren't on it). That leaves countless numbers of GH collections that have less than 60 minutes of running time (some of them, like Foreigner's "Records," are LP album retreads with 40-50 minutes on them). "The Cars Greatest Hits" is one of them. No argument about the 13 songs here; they're all magnificent. "Magic," "Let's Go," "Drive," take your pick. It's currently the best single-CD Cars collection available. But who left off "You're All I've Got Tonight," and "Bye Bye Love???" There's plenty of room for them and some others. That's why I give this 55-minute CD 4 stars instead of 5. One last complaint: THIS HAS NOT BEEN REMASTERED. Until they get around to remastering it and adding extra tracks, I recommend getting the REMASTERED 2-CD "The Cars - Deluxe Edition" (see my review). It's truly a GH collection in itself, especially with the bonus material on the 2nd CD.

Free Music Review: Nice collection
Hit: 4 Stars

This was a nice collection from the dynamic seventies/eighties techno-rock group, with the fun "Tonight She Comes" added in, but one glaring omission was "Hello Again", the rockingest single they ever released. Yeah, go ahead and hit the "no" button if you want, but you rate a "GH" release as a whole, not song by song, and as a whole, this deserved a "4" for leaving out such a good single.

Free Music Review: A short but sweet career summed up well.
Hit: 4 Stars

The Cars were one of the most talented examples of "new wave" that abounded in the late 70's through the 80's. Basically all the vital songs from a band that created catchy and quirky singles and were not always as successful in LP format. I miss "Moving in Stereo" from the first album but overall this CD represents the group well and makes for a good listen.

Free Music Review: Classic Cars - Excellent Greatest Hits Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

As a band, The Cars released one outstanding album (their AMAZING self-titled debut) and a number of other excellent and catchy singles. If this album has a weakness, its that it draws only two songs ("Just What I Needed" and "My Best Friend's Girl") from the debut record. Nevertheless, there are plenty of Cars classics on this album, including four from "Heartbeat City," ("Magic," "Drive," "You Might Think" and the title track) their most popular album. The Cars are one of those rare bands able to put out a greatest hits collection in which nearly every song WAS in fact a hit. This collection is a solid representation of their career.

Free Music Review: This album is Just What I NEEDED!
Hit: 5 Stars

No self-respecting Cars fan can call their collection complete without this particularly great collection of hits. TRUST me when I say that this band really DID change the face of pop/new wave music throughout the 80's. Having been in radio for a long time I have been able to witness first hand the changes that music has gone through over the years, and The Cars were able to stay close to their roots while still breaking new ground with each new release. As far as stand-out albums, their first (and still greatest) record stands heads and shoulders above most available, but it wasn't until 'Heartbeat City' that The Cars began to receive the mainstream notoriety they had lived (happily) without for so long. Unfortunately it was also their last release (aside from their greatest hits).

The music world recently lost Benjamin Orr (who sung brilliantly on their biggest hit, 'Drive') and sadly we will never really see a FULL reunion of this great band...but we CAN re-live their music over and over & learn again and again WHY they were so great together (MUCH better than when they were apart). I was lucky enough to see The Cars on one of their earlier tours in the mid 80's, and as far as sound went, they almost sounded like they were in the studio--it was phenomenal how GOOD it was and how CLOSE it sounded to the recorded originals...b-u-u-u-t for all that they were boring as sin to WATCH. I've always said that The Cars were a great live concert for the blind...and I STILL say it. If you enjoy this band, pick up this CD and you'll find yourself falling in love with their music all over again, trust me.
